Not only the culture of education, but also it definition is changed in Ethiopia. When a student graduates from university, it means he/she is ready to learn. But in Ethiopia they think putting the gowns means the student completed learning and will be designated Engineer, Architect and so many professional names and goes out and act as an expert without even knowing the basics of the field.
Architects in Ethiopia don't even know where a bed should be in a bedroom, they have no idea of elevator sizes, and no understanding of furniture dimensions. Similarly, engineers have no clue about soil capacity, structural design, construction methods, and quality of materials. What is unfortunate is that they don't even know how to prepare bill of quantity.
And because of their designations installed on them, they never learn or listen to the traditional skilled laborers.

And most of all, they belittle anyone they work for, the customer, if he/she tries to educate them, assuming customers have no engineering or architectural knowledge unless a degree of such field is flaunted in their face.

Ethiopian Architects & Engineers can’t practice without a license. Small projects are exempted from that requirement as is the case here in the United States. Of course, there is already a structural code in Ethiopia if that’s what you meant by ብሄራዊ ቢልዲንግ ኮድ. Building code in the sense used in North America goes above and beyond the engineering aspect. Adopting that kind of code for specific commercial buildings is a possibility but it’s impractical to standardize single family homes & small commercial buildings. It would result in another layer of bureaucracy and technocracy. It would be analogous to the failed standardization & controlling attempts of so-called ”informal” economy in many developing countries.

The list goes on. And these are the old generations who has never worked a real job in their life, yet they are now part of the the problem in their retirement age.
