ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese-built Ethiopia-Djibouti railway on Thursday started vehicle shipment from ports in Djibouti to Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.

The first vehicle shipment arrived at the Indode Freight Station on the outskirts of Addis Ababa.

A special ceremony was held at the station to mark the arrival of the first shipment.

Abdi Zenebe, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Ethiopia-Djibouti Railway Share Company (EDR), lauded the move, emphasizing that it will help realize the major aspirations of the railway in terms of facilitating Ethiopia's transportation system.

Noting the huge movement of imported commodities from ports in Djibouti to central Ethiopia and exported items from Ethiopia to the rest of the world via ports in Djibouti, Zenebe said the very first shipment of cars from Djibouti to Ethiopia signifies EDR's commitment to diversify its transportation services.

"This is an indication that we are diversifying our business. We have multiple varieties of wagons, which includes hoppers, we have refrigerator wagons, we have a large number of wagons that we have not yet utilized," Zenebe said. "This is one way of indicating and communicating to the world and to our customers that we have started to use these (railway) wagons, and this diversification and expansion of businesses will guarantee EDR's progress in the future and will expand EDR's service to the two countries and customers involved."

The 752.7-km Ethiopia-Djibouti standard gauge railway, also known as the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway, contracted by China Rail Engineering Corporation (CREC) and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), is the first trans-boundary railway on the African continent.

As the Ethiopia-Djibouti electrified railway significantly improves the freight market, EDR said the railway is enriching its services toward realizing the two countries' ambition of building an industrial and economic belt driving the economic and social development of the two countries.

Abdurahman Ibrahim, general manager of Nana Solutions, the company that partnered with EDR to import the first batch of 24 vehicles via the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway, said the railway offers various advantages to companies engaged in import and export sectors.

"We are very lucky to be the pioneers in this very good initiative. It offers various opportunities to us, including safety as using railway wagons is highly secured and safe until its final destination," Ibrahim told Xinhua. "It is also very cost-wise as it reduces the cost by almost half as compared with car-carrier trucks. Its swift delivery is also another great advantage."

TigrayLady,

President Isaias told Ethiopians that infrastructure is what is the real source of insecurity for Addis/Ethiopia. He said if efficient transport to Assab then Assab can be much closer to Addis and that matters more than whether the Eritrean or Ethiopian flag flies there. And if there are no proper roads it doesn't matter eve if it is Ethiopian flag there. That is absolute truth. Ethiopia has built some rail infrastructure to Djibouti. That's great and kudos to Chinese for facilitating. More such infrastructure needs to be built all over Ethiopia, Eritrea and all over Africa. Infrastructure is the root of prosperity. This railroad to Djibouti is just the start.

Eritreans know prosperity in the neighborhood spills over and is good for everyone. Unfortunately, crabby Tigrayans only want infrastructure to be built in their village and nowhere else. That is not how Eritreans think.

Facts

You worship Isaias Afwerki but he doesn't know anything about the importance of trade, benefits of transportation efficiency, infrastructure and that is why Eritrea is the only country in Africa that hasn't signed up for the African Continental Free Trade Area, AfCFTA, by the way, the closest sea ports to Addis Ababa are Djibouti ports.

The importance of ocean.
Noting the huge movement of imported commodities from ports in Djibouti to central Ethiopia and exported items from Ethiopia to the rest of the world via ports in Djibouti,

We are happily trading with the whole world and we should always be thankful to Somali men because the only thing we have is a long fabricated history of imaginary civilization and warrior kings who failed miserably to secure maritime outlets.

Fabricated history, the Yemeni alphabet, European monasteries, castles, churches and the counterfeit Egyptian obelisk are all we have.

I think it’s the other way around Eritrea dumped Ethiopia and Ethiopia can’t get over Eritrea and it’s independence. I will give u an example why I say this . Eritrea left Ethiopia till this day it’s only Ethiopians that talk about assap about Eritrean coasts and sea shores and why they will annex part of Eritrea. You will never hear Eritreans saying they want a piece of land of Ethiopia u hardly see any of that but the obsession with. Eritrea Red Sea is something else . Galla lady talks about Djibouti. Well I don’t think there is any Eritrean in the world that envy Djibouti for doing bussiness with Ethiopia and handling their import and export. So all in all it is Eritrea that did the dumping not. Ethiopia

Ethiopia to Export Fruits, Meat to Chinese Market

August 25, 2022 Helen Tadesse

Addis Ababa, August 25, 2022(Walta) – Ethiopia has begun negotiations with its Chinese counterpart to export fruits and meat productions to China market, Ethiopian Ambassador to China, Teshome Toga disclosed.

Following the establishment of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in 2018, China promised to publish a Report on Chinese Investment in Africa on a regular basis.

Accordingly, China has issued the second report published by China-Africa Business Council (CABC) at a ceremony held in Beijing on Tuesday.

The report, released under the title “Chinese Investment in Africa (2022): China-Africa Cooperation from a Supply Chain Perspective,” reviews the experience of China-Africa investment cooperation and put forward proposals for future cooperation.

This year’s report has featured statistical and research data from diverse sources in addition to the analysis presented on the Chinese-African business cooperation.

It also showcased efforts made by Chinese enterprises in supporting Africa’s supply chain development as well as the challenges faced during the process.

The report provided 32 recommendations for Chinese and African governments as well as enterprises.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Teshome said that Ethiopia has been working to strengthen bilateral trade and investment with China.

Noting that the two countries have been enjoying a strong bilateral economic cooperation, the ambassador said Ethiopia is one of the beneficiary countries under the Belt and Road Initiative of China.

The Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway and a significant number of other huge industrial parks are the results of this cooperation, he added.

According to him, Ethiopia is keen to strength its strategic cooperation with China with a view to realizing the economic transformation of the country as it requires technological capability and huge investment, ambassador Toga stressed.

Now, in a bid to boost trade relation with China, Ethiopia has started negotiations with its Chinese counterpart to export meat and fruit productions to the China market, he noted.

The negotiation is being undertaken in line with the step put forwarded by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed that paves the way for Ethiopian Agricultural productions to penetrate into global market, Teshome added.

According to the ambassador, banana, avocado and mango will be the first batch of Ethiopia’s agricultural productions planned to be exported to China after the negotiations and other requirements are settled.

This year’s report was launched in the presence of the Director-General of the Department of African Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Wu Peng and Permanent Representative of the African Union to China, Rahamtalla M. Osman and ambassadors of Africa countries.

It was indicated during the occasion that due to the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, the Belt and Road Initiative and other government efforts, China and Africa have realized practical cooperation in a wide range of areas, in particular in industrial and supply chain development.
