The Ethiopians changing their names as a show of pride

AFP: Pride in Oromo culture has grown over the last few decades

A surge in ethnic pride among Ethiopia's Oromo community, the country's largest ethnic group, is leading some, like Moti Begi, to change their names.

The 40-year-old used to be known at Dereje Begi.

But he ditched "Dereje", an Amharic word meaning "augmented" in favour of "Moti", an Afaan Oromoo word meaning "king".

In Ethiopia, first names are all-important - the second part of a person's name is not a family surname, usually it is their father's first name.

Mr Moti, an engineer by profession, is not alone in this name-changing trend - and seven of his friends have recently flexed their Oromo pride with new names.

For centuries, the Oromo community has been made to feel ashamed of their language - Afaan Ormooo - by the country's rulers, in particular the emperors who hailed from the Amhara-speaking north.

The easiest thing I can do to reclaim my identity as an Oromo is through changing my name.

Moti Begi

As part of efforts to unite their empire, these monarchs made Amharic the language of state.

Many chose Amharic names to fit in, but with changing political regimes since 1991, attitudes have changed - especially among the younger generation that helped Abiy Ahmed become prime minister.

He came to power in 2018 and is the country's first Oromo prime minister.
The easiest thing I can do to reclaim my identity as an Oromo is through changing my name,
Mr Moti told the BBC.

What spurred him into action was an advert in the Oromia region, where most Oromos live as the country is divided into ethnically based states.

GETTY IMAGES, Ethiopian emperors through the ages encouraged people to speak Amharic and adopt Amhara culture

The regional health authorities ran a campaign to recruit 2,000 doctors and other health workers - and stipulated they be able to speak Afaan Oromoo.

But there were objections by non-Afaan Oromoo speakers.

For Mr Moti, this hit a nerve - as many of those objecting had grown up in Oromia but had made no effort to learn the language spoken by the majority living there.

He found such attitudes narrow-minded and prejudiced.
This is what caused me to re-name myself,
he said.

Nurse refused to write Oromo name

For many Oromo children growing up over the last 30 years - following the fall of the Marxist regime - there has been a hybrid form of naming.

Researchers put this down to the new government recognising the country's ethnic diversity and allowing children to be taught in their mother tongue - although Amharic remained the official working language.

GETTY IMAGES, There are around 40 million Oromos out of Ethiopia's population of 115 million

Oromo children started getting an Afaan Oromoo name as well as an Amharic one.

Thirty-two-year-old Abdi Gamachu, had the Amharic name "Girma", meaning "grace", which he used to use officially until he changed it in 2005.

His mother chose it under pressure when a nurse objected to writing "Abdi" (meaning "hope" in Afaan Oromoo) in the official records when he was taken as a baby to be vaccinated.

But he was always known at home and by all his friends as Abdi.
I am now happy to get the name I like on all my essential documents. The name represents my true Oromo identity.

Above all, the name is given to me on purpose by my family out of their aspiration and hope for regime-change at the time.
The same was the case for Ebisa Bayissa, who has written many books in Afaan Oromoo.

One of his first titles, Miiltoo - a psychology text - was published under his Amharic name Endalkachew Bayisa, even though it was written in Afaan Oromoo.

I wanted an Oromo name that showed my true identity.

Ebisa Bayissa, author

The name "Endalkachew", meaning "as dictated to" in Amharic, was chosen by a teaching colleague of his father's who was a fan of a prime minster under Emperor Haile Selassie with the same name.

So as a child he officially became Endalkachew, but everywhere else he was called "Ebisa", an Oromo name meaning approval or blessings.

As he gained popularity and published more books, the writer, who is in his late thirties, wanted to be recognised for who he was:
I wanted an Oromo name that showed my true identity.
For Mr Moti, the easiest way to erode a community's identity is to remove its language and naming culture - it's like removing their tongue.

He feels that by completely abandoning his Amharic name, he and many others are getting their cultural voice back - a stand he hopes others will make.

BBC says nothing about the vast majority of Africans who have Anglo Saxon first names. The fact is ,oromos we’re not forced to adopt Amharic or arabic names.

*****
Haile seals sent was not 100% Amhara.

Abdi is arabic for slave.

Some ye shermûta lijoch, instead of attacking the white man that owns them, they attack someone like me who brought this article here as a warning to Ethiopians about the sabotage being planned against them.

Mr. Misraq

i will answer your question Anglo-Saxon and Amhara name are not a Christians name it is a colonizer name nothing to do with the religion ... yes there are name in bible like

Miriam
Myra
Naomi
Mary. ...
Eve. ...
Hannah. ...
Deborah. ...
Delilah. ...
Rebecca

but not አበበች፣ ዘነበች፣ ዘብ ይደሩ፣ የማዋይሽ ፣ አታክልት፣ ማሚቴ ፣ ማሬ፣ ጎበዜ፣ ደመ መላሽ፣ በቀለ፣ ተስፋ፣ ጎርፉ፣ ሽዋን ግዛው፣ this is an Amhara name

now the different between name are all of them are biblical name it is not Arabic name they r Islamic or Quran name

saying Mohammed is an Arabic name is like saying Naomi is Hebrew of course Biblical name is Hebrew name just like Islamic name is an Arabic name ... mind you all most all Muslim name are from Quran .. for better understanding ask Horus who is expert in history because he lived in time of biblical time

First, this is not News worthy. The fact that BBC carries it tells the Western countries are restless in spreading hate and animosity in Africa in general, in Ethiopia in particular being a gate way to the continent. Alot of Africans assumed European names so are Asians etc. Even in this time, Chinese people for instance change or use nick name. These fanatic Oromos first nobody asked them to take an Amharic name and second they are chagning it to please their instigators. These fantics are now transname next could change their gender and become trans. The Trans Oromos are those victim of chronic inferiority complex. There is no cure for this, chnaging name, changing cloth, changing gender, country will not help.

Ethoash....aka NATO

let me NATO you with this info. Go and see if you can find these anglo-saxon names in the bible Edward, Smith, Margaret, Penelope or Sandra . Also arabic names are not Quranic names. Arabs being the first to adobt islam, their name is considered as islamic. The same like Abraham, Jacob, Joseph...etc are Hebrew names.

we have the president of United States Joe Biden or Joseph Biden holding a hibrew first name. Why wouldn't BBC make news about an American using a Hebrew first name? the answer is simple. The age old British tactic of Divide and Conquer works in this way

NATO Nations Block Russian Envoy's Plane From Serbia Visit

Serbia and Russia say a planned visit by Russia’s foreign minister to the Balkan country will not take place.

June 6, 2022

FILE - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, left, speaks with Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic after a press conference in Belgrade, Serbia, Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021. Serbia says that a planned visit Monday, June 6, 2022 by Russia’s foreign minister to the Balkan country will not take place. The announcement followed reports that Serbia’s neighbors, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Montenegro refused to allow Sergey Lavrov’s plane to fly through their airspace to reach Serbia. BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Serbia and Russia confirmed Monday that a planned visit by Russia's foreign minister to the Balkan country will not take place, with Moscow accusing the West of preventing the trip by blocking the envoy's plane flight.

The announcement followed reports that Serbia's neighbors — Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Montenegro — had refused to allow Sergey Lavrov's plane to fly through their airspace to reach Serbia.
An unthinkable thing has happened,
Lavrov said during an online news conference Monday.
A sovereign state has been deprived of its right to conduct foreign policies. The international activities of Serbia on the Russian track have been blocked.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic earlier Monday met with Russia's ambassador to Serbia who informed him that Lavrov could not come because the Russian government plane was denied necessary flyover permissions, a statement issued after the meeting said.

Vucic expressed “dissatisfaction” over the “circumstances” that prevented the visit and added that
despite all, Serbia will preserve independence and autonomy in political decision-making.
Later Monday, Vucic told state RTS broadcaster that the cancelation of the visit
was not too much of a surprise
and that arrangements faced problems from the start.
Russia is a traditional friend of Serbia,
Vucic said, describing Serbia's policies toward Russia as a
rational, sensible and soothing way within Europe, where it is not easy to hear a voice of reason and dialogue.
While formally still seeking European Union membership, Serbia has maintained friendly ties with Russia despite its invasion of Ukraine, refusing to join Western sanctions against Moscow. Many in Serbia view the fellow-Slavic nation as a close ally and Moscow has backed Serbia in its effort to retain its claim on Kosovo.

Lavrov blamed NATO countries for engineering the flight ban — Montenegro, Bulgaria and North Macedonia are all members of NATO — noting that the action showed again that the main purpose of the alliance expansion is to try to isolate Russia.

Lavrov still plans to travel for talks Wednesday in Turkey, where he can fly directly over the Black Sea. Turkey has sought to maintain good relations with both Russia and Ukraine while also trying to help international mediation efforts in the war.

The Russian foreign minister said the West has trampled on the principle of a free choice of foreign policy partners.
From the Western viewpoint, Serbia mustn’t have any choice, any freedom in choosing its partners,
he said.
The West clearly shows that it would use any base means to apply pressure.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov deplored what what he described as “hostile actions," but said this
won’t significantly hamper the continuation of our country’s contacts with friendly countries like Serbia.
In Belgrade, Serbia's pro-Russian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin expressed “deep regret” that a “great and proven” friend of Serbia could not come. Vulin added that
Serbia is proud that it is not part of anti-Russian hysteria, and the countries that are (part of it) will have time to be ashamed.
Serbia, meanwhile, also is almost fully dependent on Russian gas. Vucic recently talked to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone to arrange a new deal on gas supplies for the next three years.

Analyst Slobodan Stupar described Lavrov's attempted visit to Belgrade as a “show” that would have been used by Moscow to further vilify the West.
I believe the Russians invited themselves
to Serbia, Stupar told The Associated Press.
They are terribly isolated. ... They can now say that Europe and the world are not democratic and won't allow a simple flyover.
Stupar said Vucic has placed himself “in between” Russia and the West.
That is the worst possible position one can imagine,
Stupar said.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected in the region later this week.

Abere, yes, selecting a name is private like you chose "Abere" and I chose "Temt" as a Nick on this forum. However, as someone stated above, many Africans' first name (Robert, Pierre, etc.) is that of their ex-colonizers as if they still miss their masters who left Africa some sixty years ago. One of the things that used to differentiate us (Eritreans & Ethiopians) from the rest of the Africans was that we proudly chose and kept our native names. But sadly, I can't say the same these days for some irresponsible copycat parents (guardians) are naming their kids with silly names like Livingston, Agnes, Kristina, Shakespear, Stalin, Henry, Monalisa, etc., etc. To me, that is not freedom of choice, but trying to act and be accepted" by the Ferengis.
As to the Shemalebitch, ምጥራቕ፡ saying there I talian names in Eritrea, little does this idiot know that many Eritrean halfcasts were fathered by Italian men. What does this dumboh think the fathers gona call their kids!

Some ye shermûta lijoch, instead of attacking the white man that owns them, they attack someone like me who brought this article here as a warning to Ethiopians about the sabotage being planned against them.

Thank you for posting the article. I saw it a few minutes ago on Twitter and of course, some trolls were insulting the Oromo on it.
They don't like when the bad history of Ethiopia is exposed, and that's putting it lightly.
Abdi has a meaning in Afaan Oromo too, but of course, those who despise the Oromo, their language, their culture etc, won't know that.
