Ancient City of Adulis

Post by TesfaNews » 24 Apr 2022, 16:07

Adulis was an ancient city located along the Red Sea in the Gulf of Zula, about 40 kilometers south of Massawa. Its ruins lie within the modern Eritrean city of Zula. Adulis was the emporium considered part of the D'mt and Aksumite empires. The location of Adulis can be included in the area known to the ancient Egyptians as the Land of the Gods . The Egyptians traded extensively with settlements and kingdoms on the Horn of Africa and based on archaeological finds, Adulis was regularly visited by Egyptian merchants.
The port was a transit point for ivory, slaves, and exotic animals from the interior of Africa. From Adulis they were shipped to Egyptian ports in return for luxury goods. After the establishment of the Ptolemaic Dynasty in Egypt (305 to 30 BC), the volume of trade between Adulis and Egyptian ports increased. Adulis is believed to have been part of the kingdom of D'mt at this time.
According to legend, the port was established by escaped Egyptian slaves. In reality, it was probably founded by local people from the Horn of Africa. One of the main exports of Adulis were war elephants and they were used by the Ptolemies in their many wars against the Seleucid dynasty - a dynasty which ruled over Syria and a large part of western Asia from 312 to 64 BC.
The Excavation of Adulis
The site was first excavated by British archaeologists who completed a survey of the site and found three large structures made from stone blocks, believed to have been a trio of temples. Another large building has since been identified by a German expedition as ‘the palace of Adulis'. Several other structures unearthed at the site, may have been public buildings and former private residences , although one of the stone ruins in the area surrounding the old port is thought to have been a mausoleum for the Adulis elite. Most of these ruins now consist only of low walls and foundations. Perhaps the best-known structure that remains at the port is that of a Byzantine style Christian Church.

Adulis was home to Eritreans Greeks and Ancient Egyptians, Adulis was a Port the Greeks would travel towards in their trade with Classical India

This is just like Aksum. It is part of The Aksumite Kingdom and was the main port of the Aksumite Ethiopian Empire.
Eritrea is a group of districs taken from Tigray by Menelik and given to Italy on May 2, 1889 by signing the Wuchalli Treaty.

"According to legend, the port was established by escaped Egyptian slaves." This seems to be accurate because the word 'adulis' is a Greek word meaning 'slave'.

A slave cannot form a port or a city because there is a lot of planning, finance and labour force.
There might have been some slaves from Egypt and went to Adulis to live or work there. The Roman white slaves used also to live in Adulis. But as a port, Adulis was by Aksumite Ethiopian emperors, who were motivated by trade with Europe, India, China and Persia.

Adulis has nothing to do with slave trade. It was one european individual who claimed there was slave trade there. He was wrong or intentionally twisted the facts. Axumite empire did not conduct slave trade as the Europeans like to claim attempting to tranish the legacy of the empire. Horus is doing the same thing here

As it was proven when king Tona of welayita was sending his own people to Kenya as slaves, Minilk is the records telling King Tona to STOP selling his own peoples. Slave trade in east Africa started in late 1700.

Horus is wrong.

The buried city of Adulis is one of the ancient places in Eritrea that are believed to exist thousands years ago. There exist folklores that suggest the word “Adulis” means "free people”. And it is believed that the place got this name because slaves escaping from ancient Egyptian lords used to settle in the place.

ኣንተም ተው ኣንተም ተው! . . .

ይህ ተመራማሪ ምን እያለ ነው፡ እስቲ እንስማው!
From the sea any journey into the interior and to Axum itself had to begin from the port city of Adulis, which lay just a few kilometers inland from the western shore of the Gulf of Zula. It is the very name of Adulis that passed into that of Zula by way of a deformation as Azulis. The etymology of the word Adulis remains a mystery to this day, because it could be either Greek, or Semitic, and there is no way of telling which it is. If Greek, the word would imply, from the privative prefix a-, an absence of slaves (douloi), but such an explanation seems highly implausible. Scholarly efforts to turn the name into a reference to a settlement of former slaves, who, being no longer enslaved, might be said to live in a “slave-less” place, are desperate measures that few have been willing to accept. But if the word is not Geek but Ethiopic, which is a Semitic language, the *ad* element would mean “place,” and that seems much more promising. A tribal designation of some kind might follow, and so “place of the Uli or Ule” may be the answer to this puzzle, exactly as Enno Littmann once suggested.[“The Throne of Adulis, Red sea wars on the eve of Islam, by G.W. Bowersock page 8]

Yeah, I can take that. Adulis ain't no Greek. And we didn't sell no slaves there in the ancient times. Horus wants to lie we did. And he said Egyptian slaves built it. There were no presence of Egypt after the axumite empire!

Slave trade in east africa actually started at late 17 century. King Tona was a big slave trader. Minilk got king Tona to stop selling slaves. He defeated him and told him to abolish slavery basically otherwise consequences will follow. Minik was the defender of the oppressed
