Considered as a collected literature of famous people, the Bible is a sublime book; but as a sacred history of a divinely appointed people it is unique. It is not an easy book; the reader needs a guidance and discipline. But more, readers should realize that we are living in an age of momentous biblical achievement, when the Church affords the opportunity of sound biblical studies not only to the clergy but also to the laity. For the last century the biblical question has been her great concern. Her teaching on it has grown more and more precise, as one sees in great councilor document Dei Verbum, which is one of the main topics of this book.
Before one faces up to the question: how to read and study the Bible? One should ask oneself: why read the Bible? And this in turn, invites the further question: what is the Bible? These three questions each of them reasonable, all of them important, can very well form the program of this book.
The questions are not only reasonable but important because we believe that the Bible is important in itself and is important for us, you may well imagine that you know, perhaps know quite well, your Bible. That may be. But it might be that you have ideas about the Bible that are not quite right, that are not helpful at all. This book is intended to help readers of the Bible; it see it in a new light, to help them understand it better, to appreciate it more, meditate it and live by it. It might even, in some measure, enable this word of God to influence to readers life more positively and more deeply. People regularly hear the Bible described as “the Book” even as “the book par excellence”. If they have ever tried to read the Bible they will have quickly come to realize that, apart from appearing between two covers, it hardly seems to be a book. It emerges as a collection of writings which as one gets to know them better, display an impressive diversity even within the New Testament. We have something more approaching a modest library than a book.
Why are Scriptural writings so diverse? Why is our Bible so predominantly Old Testament in extent? How and in what way is this varied literature word of God and word of God for me, for us? These are only few of the questions we must consider in the framework of the three broad questions we have previously proposed. It is hoped that the answers will not only be positive, but positively helpful, and that this new guide will help people to hear the word of God in the words of men.
