What do water, books, medicines, and houses have in common? In some way or another, these and many other parts of our life are intertwined with forests. This #WorldForestDay2022, Eritrea renews commitment to recover its forests through afforestation.

ERITREA: More than three million trees planted by 2021

By Boris Ngounou

February 1, 2022

Reforestation activities continue to go strong in Eritrea. By 2021, more than three million tree seedlings have been planted across the East African country. This is according to the annual activity report, published on January 30, 2021 by the Eritrean Forestry and Wildlife Authority.

The Eritrean government is calling on the people to become more involved in efforts to ensure the safety and sustainability of forests and wildlife.
We aim to increase the forest cover to 10% nationwide, within the next five years,
announces Colonel Kinfe Habtom, the director general of the Eritrean Forest and Wildlife Authority.

In its statement issued on January 30, 2022, the Authority gave an update on reforestation activities carried out last year.

In 2021, more than three million tree seedlings were planted across the country. According to the Forestry Authority, 45% of these trees were planted by individuals, 36% by communities, students and institutions, 17% through the student summer work program, the rest by school communities as well as members of the defense forces.

Nearly 614,500 hectares of land dedicated to wildlife

In terms of wildlife protection, the Forestry Authority reports that nearly 614,500 hectares of land are set aside for this purpose across the country. This includes 106,000 hectares in the northern and southern Red Sea escarpments, 44,000 hectares in Gash Setit National Park in western Eritrea, and 64,500 hectares in the Dahlak Archipelago off the coast of Eritrea in the Red Sea.

Affected by long and frequent droughts, Eritrea, where 75% of the population still lives on rain-fed agriculture, according to the World Bank, quickly understood the need to regreen its territory. Vegetation plays an essential role in maintaining ecosystems. In addition to sheltering wildlife, it regulates the water cycle. Thus, following its independence in 1991, Eritrea embarked on a vast reforestation program at the end of which nearly 27 million trees were planted.

The new generation is unleashing its potential......Cleverly embedding (on the first clip) a fashion show into providing exposure and showcasing to one of their nation's capacity and ingenuity - built by Eritreans brain and limited resource- oozing Eritreans can-do spirit! Kudos to them!

Like their mothers, our young women have been at the forefront in all aspects of the nation-building.

Raising the political and social consciousness of the young generation is paramount to the well-being of any society.......Older sisters sharing their experience with their younger siblings, even if the age gap isn't that wide.

Brother quindibu and others,
firstly, let me admit that I have never been a fan of "fashion shows" for it seems to me that there was no added value by exposing one's body in some outfits that someone is trying to advertise. Some people describe it as a talent! What talent? While people are entitled to their own views, I'd rather see our young girls and women get the education they need and aspire to be Engineers, Doctors, Pharmacists, Nurses, Anesthesiologists, Technicians, Farmers inland and dairy, Scientists, Educators, Teachers, and Professors, as well as, Judges, Attorneys, and Lawyers, etc. I especially love to see them enter the professional fields that were historically monopolized by men like trucks, trains, and various earthmoving equipment operators. I am happy to see them, nowadays, that they have been successfully participating in the naval and air profession, not just as flight attendants, but as pilots and navigators. I am also glad that they have been active in the sports world! In my humble opinion, that should be the image our women, deservedly, portray.

Brother Temt,

I have nothing to disagree with one of your central points. Yes, our women have earned their place in the society, and I would also like to see them entering in more numbers in fields that have been traditonally dominated by men. They don't need anyone's permission for that.

Having said that I wouldn't personally agree with the assertion that 'fashion shows' have no added value, although my post wasn't about the fashion show per se. I just liked the idea that while it could be done in the house, the chosen location for the show has some significance in introducing and amplifying Eritrea's beauty, ingenuity and can-do spirit. I've seen some directors ( like Yonas Minus, for example) embedding some beautiful locations in some of their music clips. Properly done, I strongly believe, fashion shows can also be another strand in amplifying our values and norms. But I fully understand your concern and the perils of objectifying women as well.....I've noticed that in some of our music or movie clips. And it's our collective responsibility, especially the women, to fight this back.

Cheers!
