Looks like ETV's ዓይናችን is back.
It is one of the best investigative journalism on state media, that is known for confronting authorities including ministers with hard facts and hard questions. Welcome ዓይናችን! Hopefully every institution will be scrutinized!
ዓይናችን program is produced by ETV with the collaboration of the Ethiopian Institution of the Ombudsman (የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ዕንባ ጠባቂ ተቋም).
Today, authorities in Oromia region are being confronted with waste of money, mismanagement and bad public service.

Where I live “ investigative journalism” is done by the private press. I am not saying the state media shouldn’t be part of it. The private media in Ethiopia is very weak and poor to engage in time consuming investigative journalism. But the Ethiopian government has an obligation for the private press to flourish. There are ways to do that.

In many European countries it is common for state medias to conduct investigative journalism along and in cooperation with the private media. In Ethiopia the private media is 100% dependent on Ad revenues and sees the urban population with purchasing power as its main target. This forces private medias to focus on entertainment shows that can draw large crowds of their main urban targets. Hopefully this would change if the purchasing power of the rural population becomes relevant for companies that pay for their product commercials. For now, we are left with state medias for investigative journalism. Our private TV and Radio medias are almost fully concentrated on urban population with almost 100% using Amharic as their communication medium. They lack diversity in language, culture, shows etc. They serve only a specific segment of the population with higher purchasing power.Sam Ebalalehu wrote: ↑01 Mar 2022, 17:46Where I live “ investigative journalism” is done by the private press.
