In 2010, while working for the BBC, Martin Plaut came across a confidential information that he knew would expose the TPLF as a corrupt, famine-making organization, so he reached out to the TPLF leaders in an attempt to extort money in exchange for not releasing the information. But after the TPLF called him bluff and refused to pay him the amount he was demanding, he went ahead and published the information on BBC under the title: "Ethiopia famine aid spent on weapons", accompanied by photos of TPLF rebel leaders receiving cash from a CIA operative.

The TPLF were shocked by the report and quickly made attempts at damage control by agreeing to pay Martin Plaut twice the amount he demanded in order to stop him from releasing further incriminating information to the media. Martin Plaut soon left the BBC and started working as a full time paid propagandist for the TPLF in fabricating and manufacturing negative news reports about Eritrea.

As funds start dwindling, the TPLF may have stopped making payments to Martin Plaut for his anti-Eritrea propaganda services, and it appears that he's making a second extortion attempt to squeeze money out of the dying terrorist group.
