Prof. Haggai Erlich, an expert of Ethiopian history for 50 years, who wrote the biographies of Alula Aba Nega and HSI, said when Mussolini invaded Ethiopia in 1935, he went around Tigray. He did not dare to enter Tigray first from North.

የእንግሊዞች እና የትግሬ ጓደኝነት ጦሳቸው። እነኝህ ጥቂቶቹ ግን ያታወሳሉ

In early 1868, the British force seeking Emperor Tewodros’ surrender came to an agreement with Dajazmach Kassa of Tigray, in which Kassa would let the British pass through Tigray (the British were going to Magdala which Tewodros had made his capital) in exchange for money and weapons. Surely enough, when the British completed their mission of assassinating Abyssinian Emperor Tewodros and were leaving the country, they rewarded Dajazmach Kassa of Tigray for his cooperation with artillery, muskets, rifles, and munitions, all in all worth approximately £500,000 (Marcus 2002, 71-72). This somewhat unexpected military windfall contributed greatly to his subsequent rise to power.
Six months later on 21 January 1872, Kassa became the new Abyssinian emperor under the nickname Yohannes IV.
Through out most of his reign, Yohannes stayed in close contact with the British. He wrote many letters to British leaders and often regarded the British as his 'protector'.

- "I have now another mother and another protector among the European kings and people: Only believe England as my country: if my country is fair in the religion and love of our Lord Jesus Christ we are one and near. I cannot believe that your Majesty shall separate me from your children." (1991, Okbazghi Yohannes, p. 41)

Emperor Tedrwos brought the crises on himself by arresting peaceful white missionaries and other professionals just to show his frustration against the then super power, the Great Britain. Though a number rivals of Emperor Tedrwos were positioning themselves to support the British , the British approached the Tigrayan Kassa Mirach for help to give them access through his land. It was politically correct and an opportunity that should not be missed for Kassa Mirach to support the British in getting rid of an increasingly isolated, weak and unpopular Emperor Tedrwos that already was unable to govern Ethiopia and lost support within Ethiopia due to his dictatorial rule and unable to work together with the regional powers. Compared what Minilik did ( selling the present day Eritrea to Italy in exchange of armaments), what Kassa Mirach did is nothing.
