The Ethiopian global diaspora dispersed over the North America, European, Asian and African continents is believed to be 5 million strong in size.
Until now, the power of the diaspora had been limited to remittance, individual investor and knowledge transfer effort. No one knows the exact amount of annual remittance flows, it could be 4 to 6 billion US$.
The 30 year long diaspora opposition to TPLF rule has now become a massive political, diplomatic, public relations and media support base of Ethiopia. With continuing US/EU hostility to Ethiopian aspirations, this untapped force will become ever more organized and purpose driven.
Research into all American migration population shows that eventually only 5% of migrants from any nation eventually return to their country of origin. What % of Ethiopian diaspora will go back home permanently, no one knows as of know. Considering the intensity of patriotism among our diaspora, more than 10% may eventually return.
With respect of this particular homecoming event, its the economic impact is to be 1 billion dollar or about$50 billion Birr. Again, the psychological, political, cultural, and diplomatic impacts of the event are truly historic!
