Danakali creates new sodium-ion battery material stream with rock salt production planned for Colluli
Colluli is a 200-year life of mine project, the rock salt resource represents another potential revenue stream from Colluli and reinforces Colluli’s primary business model. We believe that the new generation of sodium ion battery development is an opportunity that complements other potential end uses for our mined Rock Salt given Colluli’s proximity to regional markets,
says chair.
Danakali Ltd (ASX:DNK, LSE:DNK, OTC:SBMSF) is preparing to capitalise on recent gains in the rock salt spot price, moving to leverage the rock salt resource at its Colluli Sulphate of Potash (SOP) Project in Eritrea, which boasts the world’s highest JORC resource of potash with a solid salt SOP reserve of 1.1 billion tonnes and a rock salt resource of 347 million tonnes at 96.9% sodium chloride.
DNK considers Colluli’s rock salt a potentially economic resource due to positive shifts in the rock salt market caused by a new generation of sodium-ion batteries developed by CATL.
These new sodium ion-e cells are capable of charging faster and operating at lower temperatures than lithium-ion batteries, with the added bonus of 30% lower raw material production costs.

Rock salt prices have risen rapidly year-on-year, averaging about 47% growth by that metric with the current average price sitting at US$50-$60/tonne. Rock salt is seen as a potential source of sodium needed for the mass production of sodium-ion batteries.

Other primary applications for rock salt include its use for de-icing, water treatment and in the chemical, aluminium, oil, paper, textile and food industries.

“Another potential revenue stream”
Danakali chair Seamus Cornelius said:
While the primary focus of the Colluli Project is potash, the project’s mine plan already requires Danakali to mine through the upper rock salt layer atop the project’s SOP mineral resource to access the target salt layers of carnallitite, sylvinitite and kainitite that start at 16 metres below surface.Colluli is a 200-year life of mine project, the rock salt resource represents another potential revenue stream from Colluli and reinforces Colluli’s primary business model.
We believe that the new generation of sodium-ion battery development is an opportunity that complements other potential end uses for our mined rock salt given Colluli’s proximity to regional markets.
Colluli has the potential to produce a 96.9% pure rock salt which was previously described as waste from the open-cut mining process.
Potash mining at the project during modules 1 and 2 will produce an estimated 128 million tonnes of rock salt at an annual production rate of 1.8 million tonnes per annum, which will be stockpiled in preparation for export from the proposed Anfile Bay export terminal during the first 60 years.
About Danakali
Danakali Ltd (ASX:DNK, LSE:DNK, OTC:SBMSF) is focused on the development of the Colluli Sulphate of Potash Project in Eritrea, East Africa.
The company is evaluating renewable options of solar, wind and geothermal energy for becoming a zero-carbon company in the production of SOP at its Colluli Project.
Its vision is to bring Colluli into production using the principles of risk management, resource utilisation and modularity as a growth platform to develop the resource to its full potential.

On 19 Dec 2005, the Eritrea-Ethiopia Claims Commission ruled Eritrea's use of force in 1998 to retake Badme not justified but at the same time stated that it didn't regard its jus ad bellum finding as that Eritrea initiated an aggressive war. In 2021, Ethiopia admitted TPLF instigated the War.
The ruling, on use of force, was highly criticized by legal scholars for lack of jurisdiction & due to the fact that it came after a separate Boundary Commission ruled that Badme as within Eritrean territory. In 2020, Eritrea lawfully regained Badme after 18 years of occupation.

CLIMATE CHANGE
Renewable energy Eritrea’s best bet to a resilient future
Wind and solar some of the most affordable renewable alternatives readily available.
From Africa Renewal: 17 December 2021
By: Amakobe Sande and James Wakiaga
https://www.un.org/africarenewal/magazi ... ent-future

Provision of clean, affordable, and sustainable supply of electricity for 8,000 households in sub-towns of Areza and Maidma and 28 rural surrounding villages. UNDP Eritrea
Like other countries in the Horn of Africa, Eritrea is not spared from the adverse effects of extreme weather and climate-related disasters. Now compounded even further by the unprecedented socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the worsening climatic conditions jeopardise the country’s development trajectory, as the crisis has further eroded the resilience capacities of communities.
Despite these challenges, Eritrea's accession to the global environment and energy conventions are among the country's attempts to reverse the worsening climatic trends. The country demonstrates its resourcefulness and an enormous commitment by playing a part in reducing net emissions by upholding the basic tenets of the Paris Agreement that requires all parties to make ambitious contributions.
The government envisages achieving its goals of being climate change-responsive by ensuring the transition to a carbon-free economy. It is also working towards raising the share of electricity generation from renewable energy.

Ms. Amakobe Sande, UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea
According to the 2019 World Bank Global Electrification Database, https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EG ... cations=ER 50.3 per cent of Eritreans have access to electricity, with electrification reaching 75.6 per cent and 36.6 per cent of the urban and rural population, respectively.
From fossil fuels to renewables
Eritrea’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) https://www4.unfccc.int/sites/ndcstagin ... ritrea.pdf identifies a shift from fossil fuel-based energy generation to electricity generation mixes using renewable sources and reducing transmission and distribution losses. It also encourages environmentally sound technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The country’s energy sector also emphasises the use and introduction of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and geothermal power, and taking concrete measures away from fossil fuel dependency.
Through its NDC, Eritrea reflects a sustained commitment to implementing mitigation and adaptation interventions with notable progress on energy transition to meet the growing energy demand through increased energy efficiency and modern energy technologies.

Mr. James Wakiaga, UNDP Resident Representative in Eritrea
The government is working with relevant stakeholders across various sectors towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions by implementing carbon-neutral, sustainable pathways that directly bear on mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
Renewable energy solutions such as wind and solar are some of the most affordable alternatives readily available and essential engines for green job creation and sustainably reinventing economies post the pandemic.
Besides contributing to net-zero's objective by 2050, scaling up clean energy access is equally critical to uplifting the lives of communities in an affordable, cost-effective, and sustainable manner. Consequently, we cannot underestimate the enormous potential of renewable energy resources that the country could leverage.
However, increased access to affordable technology is required to guarantee the viability of pursuing a broad renewable energy portfolio that ensures affordability, accessibility and adaptability are within reach.
For Eritrea, fundamental opportunities for clean energy sustainability include ownership that the government and participating communities have already demonstrated in implementing energy access projects with high potential for replication and up-scaling.
Communities are already playing a catalytic role as partners to the existing communal structures that provide reliable resources and ownership to boost implementation.
The solar-powered mini-grids with a 2.25 MW generation capacity providing modern and affordable energy to the rural towns of Areza and Maidma in the south of the country and 33 off-grid surrounding villages is an example illustrating how public-private partnership and ownership are crucial in green energy solutions.
The government is leveraging renewable sources and technology to increase energy access in an inclusive and people-centred approach that has a total buy-in of the community.
Whereas the Ministry of Energy and Mines fully implements the $13 million (11,762,778 Euro) project, the community contributed labour and donated land to establish the solar stations, furthering the potential utility of this project and communal ownership.
With support from the European Union and UNDP, the project benefits more than 40,000 individuals who previously had no access to power, including creating job opportunities for over 513 small enterprises and improved services in schools and health facilities with renewable energy-based infrastructure.
Linking households with solar energy
In addition to connecting households and communities with solar energy, several women-headed households also have benefited from the provision of energy efficient cooking stoves. These contribute to reducing fuel utilisation, decreasing deforestation rates, and increasing positive impacts on women's health, including their involvement in basic household needs.
Access to clean energy can transform lives. However, striking a balance between the urgency to reduce emissions and the pressing economic needs is fundamental.
Consequently, Eritrea's energy transition should be informed by multidimensional pathways that respond to diverse realities and are critical to sustaining implementation and adaptability.
The world is at the tipping point for bolder steps and immediate aggressive actions. Eritrea, a country with negligible emission contribution, can potentially lead the way to secure a safe and sustainable future by taking a different path from previous development trajectories.
As the country arises from the impacts of COVID-19, the monumental challenge is not if, but how, to progressively transition towards utilisation of clean energy sources at the core of the transformational agenda of building forward better.
While the required tools and frameworks are already in place, government institutions and stakeholders must avoid siloed approaches to addressing the evolving development challenges and harness the power of partnerships across all sectors.
Eritrea's COVID-19 national recovery strategy can and should essentially be part of the country's NDC and climate action plans that help to accelerate its commitment to the Paris Agreement.
Collectively, there is a chance to take a bold leap forward to a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future that protects the most vulnerable, with the Sustainable Development Goals as our roadmap.
Ms. Sande is the UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea, while Mr. Wakiaga it the UNDP Resident Representative, Eritrea.

Ms. Amakobe Sande, UN Resident Coordinator in EritreaAbout Danakali
Mr. James Wakiaga, UNDP Resident Representative in Eritrea
As the country arises from the impacts of COVID-19, the monumental challenge is not if, but how, to progressively transition towards utilization of clean energy sources at the core of the transformational agenda of building forward better.

Re: How it started...
I am confused, as far as I know, there is no acting single mining in Dekeli until now, so,are we talking about the Eritrean Denkeli itself or the soul owner Australian colluli company.
This false hope is boiling my blood.Zmeselo.
If you are talking about the Australian company, why are you buzzering us here with this nonesense.

This Norwegian Troll is missing the free pay he was getting from the Junta pretending to be a university professor at the Chigray land capitral. As they say IN A BLIND COUNTRY ONE EYED IS A KING, any one who has am mastery of the English language could be professor in Stonia land. Now he is back in his country where he is irrelevant, trying to stoke hate and violence hoping he could go back get some free money. Only $$$ he is getting right now is social services.
