Like what Abe Abraham pointed out gender based exploitation is a common place phenomenon. However, the extent , prevalence and types of such practices vary from one tribe to another even within the same tribe from one place to another. As I said the most important thing is to acknowledge the presence of any of the harmful cultural elements that obstruct women realizing their full potential. And you don't have expect Professor Haregewoine to subject to all of the worlds harmful practices she had enough of it from her own childhood village. I think the Tigre women are probably the most suppressed. There is even a common saying: If you want to get wealthy, marry a Gurgahe woman; if you want have a docile or submissive wife, marry a Tigre woman; if you love beauty and a vibe(ለዐደባባይ), marry to an Amhara wife, etc.

People get consumed with western hype and try to copy western values with out knowing the consequences in the long run. what they forget is though, In the west, change regardless if it is bad or good, takes place organically and it is not enforced by any one.
