Ethiopia: From Resilience To Antifragility! The Case of Global Television Network of Africa

Post by Horus » 10 Nov 2021, 18:48

When I Listened to Girum Chala describing the necessity of an African television network devoted to telling African story by Africans to the world, it reminded me of the philosophy of Antifragility advanced by the Lebanese thinker Nassim N. Taleb. Nassim's philosophy (or theory) is new and it proposes a whole new way of seeing things and is credited to have altered modern thinking . In this view, Taleb divides things of the world into three qualities based on their response to disorder.

When things and people including nations are exposed to disorder (experience chaos), (1) fragile ones breakdown, (2) the robust ones resist with resilience, rebound and remain the same. (3) But the antifragile ones get better and better with chaos, disorder, uncertainty or unpredictability.

This is exactly what is happening to Ethiopia as we speak. With the Tigrean disorder, tribal chaos, regional and global enemies doing everything to create havoc in our national life, we Ethiopians are not simply fighting back with resilience and heroism to return to our previous state of affairs. We are not fighting back to restore our neocolonial dependence for food, information and approval.

We have become, we are becoming angtifragile, we are becoming better and better with each disorder. When the west stops its food charity, we are growing more. When the west stops its loans and financial aids, we are becoming a self-helping and self-supporting people. When the western media wages information war on Ethiopia, we are building our own African Global Media!

ETHIOPIA INVICTUS!
ETHIOPIA ANTIFRAGILE!

Antifragility is the quality of a behavior that gets better and better with disorder and chaos. The more the system is subjected to chaos, disorder and unpredictability, the more the system improves, grows, excels, and becomes powerful. Ethiopian enemies hope to disrupt and disable the Ethiopian nation with multiple forms of warfare - military, political, information, diplomatic, psychological and economic warfare. But, Ethiopia is more unified, interconnected, stronger with nation wide popular uprising and mutual support and collaboration of her 120 million people.

Horus,

I have also listened to Girum Chala’s speech about the new media. I respect his initiative as well as your synaptic dispensations.

Having said that, I also think that both of you are underestimating your potentials for future practice, a point that I tried to get across under the other thread about the name choice for the new Ethiopian media.

No disrespect to the theoretician but who was it that also theorized that nothing is new under the sun?

As a student of applied science, words alone don’t impress me a lot in practice. “You are resilient” are the exact words that a British Professor said to me during our second encounter in his office shortly after I arrived in America. Resilience is a vocabulary.

The sun is what the African Akhenaten, later known as Moses, looked up to in ancient times and paved the way for Judeo-Christian-Islam establishment. It is my understanding that there are many in the west that consider this establishment as the basis of their civilization.

If there is a grain of truth in it, I don’t think that the west is far removed from Africa as your dispensations suggest. Africa of ancient times is at its core.

As a passant observer of the struggle that your generation has been through in the last 50 or so years and as someone who has labored a bit to make some inputs to sway Ethiopia toward democracy instead of destabilization, I think of a bit more of inputs.

So, what is the difference in the names Meta and Global Media for Africa? Meta, which could also be an African vocabulary.

Naga Tuma,

So that we can have a context for our exchange, what kind of applied science do you practice?

Horus,

May I say simple and simplistic math, which is to say it is not epic?

Now getting back to the topic, if you continue to think this naming order is final for this new media organization, I fail in thinking and sounding preachy that it is not the final for its growth potential.
