Sudan investigating weapons flown in from Ethiopia -state news agency

Reuters 2 minute read

KHARTOUM, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Sudanese authorities have seized a cargo of 72 boxes of weapons that arrived by air from Ethiopia and that they suspect were destined for use in "crimes against the state", Sudan's state news agency, SUNA, reported on Sunday.

The shipment is being investigated by a committee tasked with dismantling the government of former President Omar al-Bashir, who was toppled in April 2019 after a popular uprising.

The weapons had arrived in Ethiopia from Moscow in May 2019, the committee found.

The intended recipient of the weapons was unclear but the committee did not rule out that they were meant for former Bashir government loyalists who Sudanese authorities accuse of trying to undermine the country's fragile transition towards democracy, according to SUNA.

The boxes included weapons and night-vision goggles and arrived on a commercial flight on Saturday night, SUNA reported, without giving further details.

The committee pointed "to suspicions that these weapons were intended to be used in crimes against the state, impeding the democratic transition and preventing the transition to the civil state", SUNA reported.

Dina Mufti, spokesperson for the Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Ministry, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tensions between Sudan and Ethiopia have been running high due to a spillover of the conflict in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region and Ethiopia's construction of a giant hydropower dam on the Blue Nile.

The fake news doesn't make any sense, because Ethiopia and Sudan share a very long boundary of 744 km in length, and there's no need for Ethiopia to use commercial flights to send weapons into Sudan when it can easily smuggle the weapons through the 744 km porous border. This just shows the Sudanese military junta is as ignorant as the terrorist agame junta its hired to save.

Fiyameta spot on!!
I sense a great fear in Sudan's government and I think if Ethiopian government is smart enough, it can use this opportunity to destroy Sudan's ant democracy government. As Mengistu was doing for south Sudan, Ethiopian government MUST train Sudan's government opposition groups and overthrow this anti Ethiopian people and anti Sudan people Sudan's government. The current Sudan's government is very unpopular and there are many anti government protests and Ethiopian government must help these pro democracy governments in Sudan. :P

Even if this were true, and not propaganda, I do not believe that, it'd be without reason, seeing as how Sudan is already indirectly/directly threatening with statements like ''if Ethiopia doesn't accept our mediation, they may be forgetting what we can do,'' or something to that effect. A veiled threat regarding how they could help the TPLF and other enemies of Ethiopia.

SM,

A weapons trace is claimed from Russia to Ethiopia, is then ''captured'' in Sudan!! 72 boxes of hard evidence is what SUNA is reporting and attributing for a specific cause of ''crimes against the state''! It is the state of sudan making claims against an international commercial airlines whose star alliance status is in danger as well as a collapsing state run by shabia who could just as well has planted the criminal cargo for multiple dubious reasons that only higdef can hatch!

Gearhead,

I am not necessarily disputing the validity of the claims here, I am just saying that, if it occurred, it could be a type of revenge against Sudan, for their perceived, veiled threats against Ethiopia, which is as you said, led by Shabia and their buddy, Abiy. Sudan recently offered to mediate and didn't get an answer that they liked. Then, they recalled their ambassador and said, ''if Ethiopia knew/knows what we could, then their position would improve.''
Is that not a subliminal threat? When one makes threats, you have to be prepared for the potential consequences.

Ironically, South Sudan, offered to mediate a few days ago, and says that their offer was accepted!
Perhaps Abiy & co feel that Sudan isn't ''neutral,'' or on his side?
