Virtue and Vice in Ethiopian Context

Perhaps these important traits of human kind could be fehlt and lived by some of us according to our own personal and subjective perceptions. But there could also be some empirical metrics related to those concerned social groups and relate to the scale of prevalence of these important human qualities. These could be found in the respective daily lives and expressed observations of the society in question, as an example. Expressed observations could be found in a daily proverbs, norms, tabus, provisions and the likes.

Sharing, for example, of the haves with the have nots, believing in and observing the inviolability of life at the grass-root level of the concerned society, avoiding and keeping oneself from the act of stealing, believing in the dignity of human kind and protecting it even at an individual level of the members of the concerned society and etc.

This quesiton sprung to my mind after listening to a recent interview of Obbo Aba Dula Gemeda on OBN, where he said something like "there was no legacy of traitorism in the Oromo society of Ethiopia, when it comes to defending their country". This could be his subjective feeling, as it could also be an emprical observation of the reality. It can be open for discussion. He used the assertion to show the fallacy of the political program of the OLF, which claimed to pursue the path of independence of the Oromo people from Ethiopia. If indeed there was no case or not so much prevalent cases of such a history of traitorism, then indeed it will also be difficult to convince why a people without any history of traitorism against a country will now suddenly opt to depart itself from the same.

If the Oromo people has never had a history of traitorism against its country, then the next question could be why did it happen here while the case is not absent in the whole of the country, we know for sure that there were some bandas (traitors) in the country's history on multiple occasions.

Does that have got something with the level of the virtue the different sectors of the Ethiopian society developed in the course of their history?

This could be an important question for discussion.



Dambi Dollo, in West Wollega, used to be the bedrock of OLF base during the 1990s, when the group used to garner much support across the country and became more popular.
