Matthew Bryden: The man behind Sahan Africa Limited

While Sahan Africa Limited has name that seems authentically African, for SAHAN means nomadic ‘scouts’ or ‘pathfinders’ in Somali language, a Canadian man called Matthew Bryden is behind it. Bryden made his first contact with Africa in 1987 when he travelled to Somalia with the Canadian military. From that date until 2008, he worked for international organisations such as the Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE) program and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). In 1992, he served as Special Advisor to the Canadian Ambassador on Somali Affairs leading the War-torn Societies Project (WSP) from 1996 to 2003. From 2007 to 2008, just before moving to Nairobi, Kenya, Bryden worked as an adviser on Somali affairs for the United States Agency for International Development USAID and the US embassy. In 2008, he got appointed as Coordinator of the Monitoring Group on Somalia and Eritrea (SEMG). Four years later, he launched Sahan Africa Limited.

The 49 year old UK born Canadian currently lives in Nairobi and holds a Somali passport. Bearing in mind that he has been in Africa since 1987, Mr Bryden seems to know it as if it was his own continent. In a former life Canadian Bryden worked for the UN. But was sacked in 2012 for "lack of professionalism and political bias .... severely undermining the credibility of the United Nations."
