Yes for those of you who are suffering from slave mentality and always strive to appease their master by mastering their needs with passion. The British colonizers were forcing indigenous peoples to speak English and banned their mother tongs because they want take away their identity and culture. Language is an identity based on your accent or way speaking somebody can predict your identity.

As long as the message is conveyed it doesn't matter how you said the Hippocrates will get the message. you better keep quite so that we do not know how stupid you are then. Do they speak Amharic, or Chinese or Russian no so it is a curtesy to speak English. Have yo ever seen Putin, the Chinese leaders speak English even if they are fluent.

Lakeshore, I agree with you concerning what you said about colonizers. But that is not my intent. I did not say everyone should speak fluent English, only those on the diplomatic front and those who communicate with others on behalf of Ethiopia. My purpose is to help Ethiopia come out winner diplomatically.

Thanks!

You're spot on!

Don't waste your time on this reasoning with this moron; all he knows is trying to find fault with what others have said - and nothing else!

What this moron doesn't know is that even Britain, whose language is an international language, if not the international language, has got a language centre at its Foreign Office, to train British diplomats before going to work overseas, delivering 70,000 hours of training per year in 70 languages ranging from Arabic to Zulu.

Speaking English for a diplomat, whose native language in not English, is not enough at all!

You replace Ethiopia with Somalia (in the title of the thread) and that's exactly what I often say to my Somali folks, as Somalia has very few career diplomats and professional ambassadors left.

This imbecile is comparing Russia and China to Ethiopia, and doesn't even know that both Russian and Chinese are part of the six official languages of the UN.

These days, even francophone diplomats are trying to master their English proficiency.

One doesn't expect every ambassador to speak English like Pakistan Ambassador to the United Nations Abdullah Hussain Haroon :

Unless a country has lost its endogenous national language due to the adverse effect of past colonization, as a sovereign country it is appropriate and relevant for a sovereign country to use its own language in any UN platform. That is a true testament of of being equally represented among Nations of the world. For any informal communication, chats during beak session it is fine to use any language. The UN is not United Kingdom, Australia, U.S. or Canada, it is an agglomeration of Nations of God's Planet Earth. Please those of you advocating a single language have shame for yourself. Ethiopia was more involved and respected in global politics when His Majesty King Haile Selassie used to speak in the UN podium using the Ethiopian National language of Amharic. Derg was doing the same and the stature of Ethiopia was better than era of the inferiority ridden little frog, Meles Zenawi, who used Amharic fluently to spread hate in domestically but struggled to use his broken English to appeal to his Western masters. The TPLF made Ethiopia an a$$hole country because of their a$$hole inferiority complex , they s.cuk whatever their western masters put into their mouth.

Abere, I agree with everything that you said so eloquently. I am in no way advocating any single language. Since the countries Ethiopia is dealing with diplomatically and her main allies are English speaking countries, it is to our benefit if our diplomats speak fluent English to get their points across to others. I have seen so many Ethiopian diplomats struggling to utter a few words in English when discussing issues with other diplomats and Western media and that will hurt Ethiopia diplomatically.

It is good to be a double edged sword. Ture ,this makes life easier, but also remember it was the Amharic version of the Wuchale treaty that saved Ethiopia from being colonized by Italy.
