Omarhajr, Gashbarka 🇪🇷 and Humera,Welkayt 🇪🇹 : The Booming Border Towns with Renewed Hope

By Eritrea Press

30 Apr 2020 (Before The Law Enforcement )

– (EP) Located in the southwest of Eritrea, at a triangular intersection bordering Sudan and Ethiopia adjacent to the Setit River, Omhajer (pictured) is a semi-urban centre inhabited by about 9500 people.

Omhajer is a multiethnic town with eight of Eritrea’s ethnic groups residing there. The border town has several education institutions ranging from the preschool to the secondary school level and access to excellent healthcare services.

Regarding telecommunication, residents have access to 24-hour daily mobile telecommunication services.

A distinctive feature of Omhajer is its abundant natural setting that can be used as a tourist attraction in the future. The area is home to several wild animals, such as elephants, antelopes, and rare crocodiles, which could draw animal lovers from around the country and the world.

Most inhabitants rely on agriculture, and the administrative area is one of the dominant agricultural centres of the Goluj sub-zone in Eritrea.

Owing to Omhajer’s vast grazing area, many pastoralists have come to the area. The Bademit Dam, constructed ten years ago, supports local farming activities and it provides much-needed water for livestock.

In recent years, the Government of the State of Eritrea issued a national land proclamation allowing every farmer to own two hectares of farmland in the sub-region.

Omhajer's sister town, Humera, Gondar is a significant regional agricultural centre and the last Ethiopian town south of the border with Eritrea and Sudan. The town is considered to be a strategically important gateway to Sudan.

Large agricultural businesses were established in Humera to grow sesame, soybean, Arabic gum and other crops for export.

Since 1971, 700,000 hectares were being farmed, which is part of Humera and the surrounding areas.

Currently, the two sisterly towns are looking forward to the opening of the border at the Setit Bridge that connects Eritrea with Gondar.

Here are some ten facts EP prepared for Eritreans to know about the people in Humera, Wolqayt Tegede and Telemt of Amhara region.

1. Humera town has a total population of 22,000. The majority of the inhabitants are newcomers from Tigray and consists of 86.3%.

2. The TPLF forcefully took control of Humera, Wolqayt Tegede and Telemt from Amhara people due to its fertile lands and placed the areas under the Tigray kilil.

3. The Governor of Tigray Teqlay Gizat during emperor Haile Selassie, Ras Megesha Seyume once said that there was no time in the history of Ethiopia, that Humera, Wolqaytte Tegede and Telemt were administered under Tigray.

4. The Amhara people in the region are linguistics. Their mother tongue is Amharic, but speak fluent Tigrigna and Arabic as they are closer to Eritrea and Sudan. However, since 1991, they were forced by Weyane to adapt Tigrigna as their only language.

5. The people of Tigray used to go Humera areas as unskilled farmworkers Aka "SeliT Leqami" on a seasonal basis.

6. The relief organization of Tigray run by TPLF accumulated wealth by raiding cattle from the people of Wolqayt Tegede.

7. TPLF used to collect animals as punishments from Amharas because of the anti-Weyane activities from the locals. The animals then sold at markets in Sudan.

8. Under the colony programs, TPLF settled about 700, 000 to a million people of Tegaru to Gondar regions of Humera, Wolqayt Tegede and Telemt. The settlement program was financed by the money and resources from Ethiopia. Beside offering Tegaru free lands, they were given funds to establish themselves very well.

9. Today the Amhara population of the region are treated second class citizens in all aspects of life. Their mother tongue language is banned from the areas and forced to learn Tigrigna or leave the places.

10. TPLF purposely renamed local places with historical values to Tigrigna names to make sure that no future Amhara generation reclaims the area as theirs.
