Re: A recipe for disaster - Misplaced patriotism as a substitute for good diplomatic skills

Post by temari » 20 May 2021, 03:04

Thank you all for your response. From reading the replies I feel like I may have not made my case clear because some of you are talking about who is right and who is wrong. That is not my main concern and is out of the scope of my argument. I'm not saying Ethiopia is wrong in defending its interests. This is not my main argument.

My main concern is how bad Ethiopia is handling its foreign relations. Let me throw an example here to clarify my point. The US government opposes the German-Russian gas pipeline that goes through the see and in fact the US just yesterday imposed sanctions on Russian companies that work on the pipeline. This pipeline is very important for Germany as it will help get cheap gas directly from Russia instead of using the old pipeline that goes through many countries making it expensive. Germany sticks to this pipeline even though the US many times told or better ordered them to quit it. The US even warned to sanction German companies working on the pipeline. This is like the US ordering Ethiopia to stop the GERD dam for cheap electricity.

And here comes the difference. Germany knows how arrogant it is from the US to order them to quit the pipeline that will give them cheap energy but they never beat the patriotic drum saying how dare the US order us blah blah but instead they have been sending delegations after delegations and teams of experts and diplomats to the US and lobbying for their pipeline for months. Now the US spared the German companies from getting sanctioned.

What I am asking is not that we say YES SIR for everything the US says, NO absolutely not. We should defend our interest first and foremost but we have to do it professionally by sending special teams of experts and diplomats and by hiring lobbyists to defend our interest and not by hide behind misplaced patriotism. I'm asking our government TO GROW UP and become professional and most of all get the fk out of misplaced patriotism and bring all experts and skilled diplomats together and launch a diplomatic and lobbying campaign for the coming weeks and months. Patriotism is misplaced and amateurish in this particular case.

Just to give you an example how incompetent we are doing in foreign relations: our foreign minister was just once in Sudan after the relations of the two countries deteriorated. In the mean time Egypt was sending its ministers, military generals and inviting the PM, the FM and military experts of Sudan many times while our government is sitting idle, lame and lazy. I'm just telling our government to stop being lazy and get back to work. Go to Sudan, connect with the generals, try to win them over. Stop lamenting and crying while being lazy.

So my point is not about accepting every demand, absolutely not instead I'm appealing to use all foreign relations skills and tools to deal with such disagreements and challenges. That is where our government performs very badly.

Abebe Gellaw agrees with me! He said Ethiopia urgently needs professional diplomats. He suggests to appoint president Sahle-Work Zewde to be the foreign minister. One thing is for sure Demeke and his foreign ministry are a fail.

This guy could have expressed his view without resorting to such childish or ignorant use of words, if he really thinks he knows better.

Is he bragging about himself?

I dislike people who are staying on the sideline and watching the show and still dare to claim they are the ones who know it better. If they (the diplomats can't write, then he could have given them his own writting, if that may spare Ethiopia from the evil-advised interference of the neu-colonialists.

He is trying to say that Ethiopia has lacked career diplomats (suddenly) and as a result facing such an aggression as a consequence of that. If he is not satisfied with what those who are in the job are doing, then why not join in and help them out?
For his information Ethiopia is not the only country around the world that is facing such or even much more hard sanctions of the neu-colonialists and I don't think that is due to lack of qualified diplomats in all of the cases.

Refusing to take orders from foreign countries on Ethiopia's internal matters is the highest form of patriotism. Those who equate standing up for your own country with lack of diplomatic skills, may have consumed too much food-aid that they can't see anything beyond the words printed on packages containing the food-aid. That is the tragedy PM Abiy is trying to prevent by his refusal to take orders.

Ezema rightly says the main cause of the problem with Sudan is the direct result of the diplomatic failure of the government.

totally Agree

Ethiopia should learn from Eritreas experience that confronting Americans when they can switch you on and off from the world economy is not in in the country long term interest.

Guys,

America has always been the best friend of Ethiopia. Even when Mengistu turned against America, the US did not turn away from Ethiopia. Two good reasons. One, Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa. AU quarter is in Ethiopia. Ethiopia resides in the most strategic and most fragile part of the world. Two, beginning with Minilik era, the two countries had very close relationships. But, now, the USA has to deal with the alleged human right violations in Tigray. The Chinese, the Russians do not give a hoot about human right violations. They, themselves are human right violators. America and Western Europeans are the only two entities in the world who care about human right violations. USA can not look away. The US is also the most powerful country. Believe me, if Ronald Regan was alive and at the helm today, The world could have seen star wars waged against the likes of Russia and China decades ago. The Star Wars program was really the battle for the better world. USA was winning at the time. The US got away from that hence we are where we are. Now, I am not saying human right violations occurred in Tigray. But, If it did, it needs to be stopped as soon as possible. Hence, Ethiopia needs to cooperate and do the right thing. That is, work with the likes of America who can bring a stop to it. Otherwise, far grave consequences can follow. The US has sidelined the Chinese and the Russians in the past as it dealt on its own. It can do it again. The Clinton administration stayed idle in Rwanda genocide. American wont repeat the same mistake again.

aye hardliner. Do you really think the americans gives a shxxit about human right? They only use human right issue to put pressure on countries and pursue their national interest. It was president Franklin Delano Roosevelt who said "he May be a son of a [deleted] but he is our son of a [deleted] to explain why america defend and support dictators and human right abusers.

The Americans are trying to arm twist Ethiopia to make concession in regard to the Nile and GERD dam, the so called human right issues are just a cover.

Deqi,

Protecting human right is the national interest of the United States of America. National interest you say ? If America was the only country in this world, it can sustain itself without importing any and everything from the outside world, and the life standard would be the same if not better. It has everything it needs. But, human right is essential and a higher value of what makes human beings humans. I am sorry to say that the communist/socialist world is a zoo where people who are perceived be to enemies of the system are hunted everyday. It is a jungle out there. In the dictatorial countries, citizens are hunted like animals. Be glad that I am not in any position to change the world. The world of communism and socialism would disappear over night. Human beings are special, and they should be treated like wise. Respecting Civil opposition is the mechanism that allows us to behave like humans. A lot of psychopaths like Sadam, Hitler, Stalin killed, maimed millions of innocent people. Psychopath belongs to the hospital. Otherwise, society pays for it in the worst possible way.

Right on deqi arewit. America doesn't give a [deleted] about human rights that is nonsense. America likes to give pressure economic sanctions and send economic hitmans to country they disagree with. And they use human rights as a excuse. They support dictators. The news killed over 200 palestenians in a few days. Where is America where is the huma rights.
