I really hate the adjective “ giant” being associated with TPLF. That is not true. TPLF was a lucky organization. From a simple ragtag army it became formidable force because events worked in its favor First, the Soviet Union was collapsing, the Derg measure support was gone. Second, there was the failed military coup d’etat against Mengistu which lowered the military morale. Third, there was the famine which TPLF exploited, all the aid went through it, making it a government within a government. Fourth, there was a strong Eritrean support. Had the TPLF politicians accepted they were lucky, they would not have bought the fairytale “ terarawen yanketkete tweled.”
Lying to themselves led them to where they are now.

You have nailed it: Had they recognized their humble origins, extreme luck to find themselves at the top, and very limited abilities, they could have transformed themselves and Ethiopia. Their problem is that they had a split personality. On the one hand they wanted to have an independent republic of Tigray. On the hand they were the rulers of Ethiopia. Never have we witnessed in history a phenomenon like this where a separatist party ruled the larger nation from which it wants to separate. Added to this anomaly was the Tigrayan character of uninhibited mendacity. Why they needed to inflate a hundred times their history and capabilities is a mystery. But even more mysterious is why they believed their own fantasies. In the end, it led them to their demise. One hears of children who jump out of high-rises expecting to fly like super-man or bat-man. But for grown ups to do that is unheard of.
