The Unsung Heros of Ethiopia

Post by DefendTheTruth » 22 Sep 2019, 13:22

Anyone who manages to be the first in an endeavor of general relevance to a given people, a country, a continent or the human race itself, let alone in a sport discipline that is seen world-wide as special human ability and a power of social transformation and cohesion between the different sectors of humanity, among others, should be and would be celebrated as a true hero, a celebrity.

As such Ethiopian Heroes, whose names are not even that much well known to the current generation of the country deserved a better attention from those who are charged to protect all aspects of national heritage. Among national heritage is keeping and preserving the deeds and names of many of the national heroes of the country of many different disciplines.
This idea sprung to my mind today after seeing a short documentary about one of the great Athletes of our country, Derartu Tulu.

In this regard some national and continental heroes of the sports Arena, who are truly Heroes of Ethiopia and the whole of Sub-Saharan Africa are not accorded the rightful places of history book they should have been given, in my view.
Among them 3 came to my mind today:

Abebe Bekila - a world record holder in winning a marathon Gold-Medal of an Olympic sports event in 1960 as the First Ethiopian and Black-African at the Rome Olympic.

Derartu Tullu (Tulu) - a world record holder in winning a women Olympic Gold Medal at the event in 1992 at Barcelona as the First Ethiopian and Black-African woman.

Fatuma Roba - a world record holder in winning a Marathon Gold Medal of an Olympic women Marathon as the First Ethiopian and Black-African woman.

If we need to keep up the deeds of these great unsung heroes and build on them, then their names deserved to be in the national history books of their classes (the First) of an easy access to all, in my view.

Abebe bezach Se'at (Abebe's defining moments) (አበበ በዛች ሰአት):

በጣም ደስ ብሎናል፣ ምኞታችን ሞላ
አሸንፎ መጣ፣ አበበ ቢቅላ.

Better later than never, they say.

Derartu was accorded the recognition she truly deserved, not only a sports heroine but also a truly humanist daughter of Ethiopia and Africa at large.

Even this relatively unknown Athlete, Aselefech Mergia, said that she has got 60 medals, by all measures part of the top tier athletes.

She also said that she was the first Ethiopian woman to win a medal in marathon in the discipline of world championship for the country, which is a magnificent performance.

But we haven't sung her yet.
