The state department has issued a statement on the deteriorating situation in Tigray on February, 27 2021. In this statement the United States has condemned the killings, forced removals and displacement of people, sexual assaults, and other extremely serious human rights violations and abuses by the invaders. The United States also called for a full, independent and international investigation into all human rights violations, abuses, atrocities and demanded that those responsible must be held accountable.
The United States has also called for an immediate withdrawal of Eritrean forces and Amhara regional forces as essential first steps accompanied by unilateral declarations of cessation of hostilities. The United States also expressed its deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crises in Tigray and called for an end to the violence to ensure unhindered humanitarian access to Tigray.
We welcome the stand of the United States regarding the deteriorating situation in Tigray although we feel it is a little too late. However, the criminal forces that are operating wantonly in Tigray have clearly shown their disregard for international laws and norms. Thus, we do not believe they will comply with the demands of the international community. We, therefore, call upon the international community to use all instruments at its disposal to enforce the demands.
On the other end, we deeply regret the statement by the foreign ministry of FDRE. We believe ethnic cleansing cannot be overlooked in the name of sovereignty. We strongly believe that ensuring the respect of human rights lies within the jurisdiction of the international community. In its statement, the FDRE has also taken full responsibility for the deployment of Amhara region expansionist forces and as such should shoulder all the responsibility for the crimes committed by these forces. It is ironic that the government that has invited a foreign force to invade part of its land and massacre its people is concerned about the issue of sovereignty.
At last we reiterate our call for an immediate withdrawal of all invaders from Tigray and a full, independent, international investigation into all human rights violations, abuses, and atrocities and make sure that the perpetrators do not go with impunity.
