Tigray Region and Tigrayans Diaspora Community (TDC) after TPLF: problems and prospects in 2021 and beyond
By Dr S A B (MEd, PhD)

I am keen to share the above full article to the site readers and to the wider concerned parties which highlights, amongst others, the concern that if what is unfolding in Tigray are not fairly and quickly addressed, it will have lasting negative impact not only to the ordinary local Tigrayans but also to the neighbouring Amhara region and potentially to the whole country.

One of the concerning issues has been what the key players and stake-holders are doing (or not doing) in Tigray at the moment. In particular, who are missing or lagging behind to manage the crisis and take Tigray forward? From listening to and consulting the TDC members and influential media outlets, it appears to me that the majority of the TDC are not taking timely and collective action, to take the advantage of the unfolding new opportunity to shape the future of Tigray for the better. Perhaps, some exceptions are the individuals and small groups, who are carrying out small scale relief support. There are many plausible or understandable reasons for TDC and other to be cautious or for lagging behind to fully engage. This may range from natural emotions and shock of seeing the dramatic fall of TPLF. However, the downfall of TPLF is the makings of its own minority old guards and incompetent cadres, not the mistakes and faults of the majority Tigrayans or TDC members (no one else's for that matter).

In any event, whatever are the reasons, we are where we are now. Looking forward, instead of backward, what the concerned groups and those in authority should do more next. It seems to me that such groups as TDC needs to face/overcome whatever are the obstacles and be engaged more than ever (directly or indirectly) to shape the future of Tigray post-TPLF. Not doing so should not be an option. The responsibilities and the job of fixing the problems cannot be left for others and outsiders. More importantly , the local people would trust and appreciate more the engagement of its diaspora community. I feel it is critical and beneficial that the influential members of TDC as well as the Tigray media and other professional groups mobilise their members to maximise their involvement in Tigray’s affairs. This should be done now, when things are fresh on the ground, not later after things go wrong or before situations reaches irreversible point. Tigray or TDC are not necessarily exceptional in the regard. Other community groups, who face similar challenges, can draw parallel lessons to apply to the their own context. Doing so gives power and strength to all to maintain safety and security on their own backyards. More critically, to ensure unity and integrity of ancient Ethiopia.
