The Agreement on African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTA) was negotiated in the AU in Addis for the last several years. Once the Agreement was adopted and ratified by the required number of AU member countries, it was launched in July 2019 in Niamey, Niger.
AU member countries were invited to bid for hosting the Secretariat of the AfCTA. The last two candidates were Rwanda and Ghana. AU chose last year, Ghana to be the seat of the Secretariat. The implementation of the AfCTA started on 1 January, a few days ago. Following that, the activities that were being undertaken in Addis are now moving to Accra as per a previous agreement. That is the background.
The beautiful Addis ( that is now free from the TPLF mafia ) will continue to be the seat AU Headquarters. Addis/Ethiopia remains the preferred diplomatic capital of the world - which is now the third, next to New York, and Geneva
