After the death of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, Egypt lost its relevance in the eyes of Africans when it focused its foreign policy towards forging relationships with donor countries outside the African continent, a grave mistake that further alienated Egypt from its neighbors, making its dispute over the distribution of the Nile's water supply to take the shape of Africa vs Egypt conflict, in much the same way the three successive regimes in Ethiopia were viewed by Africans as tools of external powers.

Ethiopia's strength will be determined by how strong its relationship is with its immediate neighbors, but most importantly, by how it breaks its dependency on foreign aid. The "Trade-Not-Aid" strategy envisioned by Eritrea should take the center stage when formulating and implementing foreign policies in the continent. That's how self-reliant countries like Singapore were able to transform from Third World to First within a space of a few years.
