Eritrea’s saga of achieving independence in 1993 entails a brutal 30-year war and the mobilization of a remarkable national liberation movement. In the late nineteenth century, Eritrea suffered under the colonial domination of the Italians, followed by Ethiopia’s imperialism and military rule. Self-determination, not secession, because Eritreans never accepted colonial rule or Ethiopia’s sovereignty. After a war that included near-victory in the mid-1970s, internecine splits, and a strategic retreat to a mountain redoubt in the far northwest, the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF) defeated the Soviet-backed Ethiopian army and seized control of all of Eritrea in May 1991.

Congratulations! Is Eritrea better off today than anytime
in its post colonial existence? It not John foster's America that gave Eritrea on silver platter to Ethiopia, it's the Eritrean people who decided to federat with Ethiopia, freely.Ethiopia never colonized Eritrea,if that was colonisation that would give it a new meaning to the very word.

Really,"....followed by Ethiopia’s imperialism and military rule." ? Has Ethiopia been an Imperialist country ever? No, Ethiopia has been an agrarian traditional society that shared similarities with the feudal systems of few western countries. However, the landlord system of Ethiopia is more lenient and democratic than any other country that had underwent through such a phase. To simply justify the secession of Eritrea, one does not have to falsify the accurate historical recording of one of the oldest nations of the world, Ethiopia. The other myth stating that Ethiopia colonized Eritrea is also an embarrassing statement made by irresponsible people that wanted to draw sword among the kin people. This statement was the most loved by Meles Zenawi and Sebhat Nega to deny Eritrea people to live, work, prosper in Ethiopia as their own country and the ill-informed youngster activists from both sides believed them so. What is this helping to the broader people, may be for athletes just to wave a piece of cloth called Bandera otherwise this not filling anyone pocket or Mosseb with injera. The fact is, Ethiopia never colonized her own people and if fact when Eritrea was colonized by Italy ( the cause of all this curse) people of the Ethiopian proper and Italy occupied territory were culturally and economically connected. Patriots from the Eritrea province fought along side their fellow Ethiopians themselves being proud Ethiopian to defeat Italian army. As such the Italy rule was only limited on their own colonial Empire paper. The reality on ground was Eritrea was socially and economically intertwined with Ethiopia. The concept of colonization of Italy was just a theoretical and paper issue on the side of Italy alone. Again, it is worthwhile to capitalize on our similarity and unity than falsifying and exaggerating so that people will live peacefully and the future generation be endowed the positive legacy of unity ,strength and prosperity. This unwise political activism has wasted the last 50 years with ZERO benefits - this is the worldwide Fact. No body can be proud about it.

According to the fairytales ተረት ተረት of Ethiopian history "Eritrea was an integral part of Ethiopia". This imperial version of the historical argument presupposes the continuity of an Ethiopian state over a definite geographical area and common peoples. In fact, it denotes an unequivocal claim to boundaries fixed by an a priori ordinance immune to the vicissitudes of history. This sentence echoed by Haileselassei & Mengistu Haile Mariam, the former leaders of Ethiopia, sums up a large percentage of Ethiopians' sentiment towards Eritrea.

When dealing with the horn of the African region's history, a common misconception about the term Abyssinia arises. It is important to note, that before the Portuguese arrival in the horn region, the word Abyssinia never existed. Despite this fact, many contemporary writers have used this word to describe this region's past. The word "Abyssinia" comes from the word Habesha. The word Abesha (without an "H" beginning) is a word that represents Habesha as well, but this altered version is exclusively used by Amharic speakers. When the Portuguese landed in the horn region in the early 16th century AD, they took the already altered word of Abesha and Latinized it. The Portuguese subsequently Latinized Abesha into "Abbasi", "Abassinos", "Abyssinia" and finally into "Abyssinia".

Another reoccurring problematic issue is the Greek word of "Ethiopia". The word Ethiopia — meaning the land of the people with the burnt faces — was applied with the vagueness of geographical ignorance to the region immediately beyond the Egyptian frontiers which was for long the frontiers of civilization. For the early Greek writers, Ethiopia was less of a geographical location than a state of mind. For the Greeks and Romans generally, Ethiopians meant dark-skinned peoples who lived south of Egypt. At times the reference was so vague as to include peoples from West Africa, Arabia, and India. At times it was more localized, referring to the Nubian kingdom of Kush, with its capital first at Napata and later at Meroe. What was constant was that the name Ethiopian denoted a person of dark color — literally, of the burnt face — and that it connoted, above all else, remoteness.

Ethiopians often mention that their country hasn't been colonized. This claim of not being colonized has become a source of pride for many Ethiopians. Yet many of these Ethiopians who claim Ethiopia hasn't been colonized, also claim Eritrea has always been an integral part of their country, despite Eritrea being colonized (to various degrees) by not only the Italians (1890-1941), but also by the British (1942-1952), Ottomans (1517 -1866), Umayyad Caliphate (702-750 AD), the Romans, and ancient Greeks. By claiming Eritrea, they're selectively ignoring Eritrea's separate colonized past. Each time Eritrea was colonized, it unequivocally demonstrates a separate history. Such contradictions in Ethiopian historical views often lead to heated exchanges of words.

Another issue with Ethiopians claiming Eritrea today is the fact that civilization in Eritrea predates those that are found in Ethiopia. In fact, civilization in the horn of Africa started in Eritrea and worked its way to Ethiopia much later in history. In addition to being the source of civilization in the horn of Africa, Eritreans have had a distinct historical experience from Ethiopians. One such distinct past is the Beja Kingdoms of Eritrea. From 750 AD to the early 14th century AD (1988, Cliffe, Davidson, P.12), the Bejas ruled supreme in most of Eritrea; including the Eritrean highlands. This period in Eritrean history is regarded as the Beja Kingdoms. After importing large quantities of firearms, mainly from France and Russia (By 1893 Ethiopia had acquired 82,000 rifles and 28 canons), Menelik formally and finally repudiated the Wuchale treaty on 12 February 1893. Two weeks later, he announced this repudiation to the other European powers. However, Ethiopia was recognized as a nation-state by the European powers only after winning the battle of Adwa and signing of the Peace treaty Addis Ababa on October 26, 1896; six years after Eritrea had been recognized as a nation-state, albeit under Italian rule. Essentially Ethiopia was an Italian protectorate between 1889 and 1896.

Eritrea regained its de-facto independence after a bloody 30 years of war in 1991 and gained international recognition in 1993, while Ethiopia gained its independence from the British in January 1942. In 1660, the Portuguese published a map of the country Medri Bahri (Eritrean highlands) as being a separate country from not only Tigray but the many kingdoms that made up what was vaguely labeled Abyssinia. In 1830, the Swiss mercenary by the name of Dr. Samuel Gobat described the Eritrean highlands as being ruled by a Bahri-Negassi (sea king), who leads “a life entirely independent of the Ras (chief) of Tigray". Dr. Gobat makes a clear distinction between “Baharnagash” (Medri-Bahri/Eritrean highlands) and “Tigray” and further regions in what was labeled Abyssinia - He also shows us that the Eritrean people of “Baharnagash” were ruled by their own rulers and these rulers were independent of Tigray and other independent kingdoms further south, which were all collectively and vaguely labeled by the geographical term of "Abyssinia".

Ethiopian leaders also made it clear that the lands north of the Mereb river (modern Eritrea) was not part of their territory. By the late 19th century, Eritrea was often used as a political tool to gain leverage with the Italian colonialist when it was convenient for their survival. In the following two quotes, Ethiopian leaders such as Ras Alula and Menelik II are both quoted as offering lands north of the Mareb river to the Italians in order for Italian political support. Although it must be noted, at the time of their offers, neither Ethiopian leaders had any control over the Eritrean region, as Egypt and the Italians had occupied much of Eritrea by this time.

Ha! Ha! Ha! For the record,
Eritrea was "united" with Ethiopia for a mere 30 years when the midget emperor illegally abrogated the UN arranged 'Federal' setup and illegally annexed it under his Ethiopian crown. That was the only time that Eritrea and Ethiopia had any sort of political union. But since such a union was shoved down the throat of the Eritrean people without their acceptance, any 'separation' would be meaningless for secession is the separation of two legally bound units. So, stop your hallucination about "We were one country" nonsense, and the sooner the evil ዓጋመ and some Amhara ነፍጠኛ (who lately have been making empty tin can sound) accept that reality the better, if nothing else, for their mental health. Otherwise, let it be known that Eritrean political independence, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity are here to stay. Believe it!

Ethiopia itself under colonization by every rising world super power, could not possibly colonize a civilized nation like that of Eritrea. It's true that world super powers have handpicked the weakest links in the Ethiopian society and groomed them to become their viceroys and mercenaries serving their interests in the Horn region, in what could only be described as a new form of colonization whose primary weapon is aid dependency, but that is a far cry from the myths and legends the chauvinists tell themselves to stroke their ego.

The World Food Program (WPF) is the food-assistance branch of the United Nations. Since it was established in 1961, the WFP has been dumping old food reserves from developed countries into Ethiopia in the form of food-aid, and the delivery date is purposely made to coincide with the time Ethiopian farmers harvest their crops, preventing the farmers from selling their produce at a market bursting with bags of donated food. A nation under colonization does not have any say on matters that determine who eats and who goes hungry which is dictated by foreign powers holding the country hostage by aid dependency, otherwise known as colonization.

For a secession to take place one party has to be an integral part of another, but that was never the case between Eritrea and Ethiopia, in much the same way that Eritrea was never part of Italy, or the British or Ottoman empires. So the word "መገንጠል" doesn't apply to Eritrea as the country was never part of the Client State Ethiopia. Even the American architect behind the annexation, John Foster Dulles used the words "the country" in reference to Eritrea, and the word "linked" to denote that the two countries were two separate entities chained together by US interests.

When Eritrea finally broke the chains in 1991, the end result was called independence. But I don't know what the Ethiopians freed from the chains call their new-found freedom, if they were indeed free at all. Do they call it Ethnic Federalism? አብዮታዊ ዲሞክራሲ? Please help!

Eritrea (Christian Habesha) has never been at war with Amhara before Haile Selassie era there was no feud between these two. In fact King Yishaq of Bahr Negash assisted Amhara kings to defeat Ahmed Gragn. The King of Medri Bahri is said to have married king Gelawdelos daughter. Eritrea (Medribahri) was a untouched mostly sovereign principality of Ethiopia but due to the weakening of Ethiopia in 16th century the Ethiopian kingdom become only centred in Gondar abandoning Shewa Gojjam Wello Tigray to be there own kingdom . Medri Bahri was also said to have spanned from Sekota, Wello to Hamasien. Not only that the greatest supporter of king Atse Tewodros was HAMASIEN Ras Woldemikael!

During the 18th century the proud kings of medribahri were threatened and overthrown by the Kings of Tigray this led to Medri Bahri royals to support the Egyptians against there justified enemies south of mereb. Once Atse Tewodros was killed by the Tigray Emperor the era of Medri Bahri royal ties with Ethiopia Ended leading to the rise of Eritrean Nationalism in 1870

Keep in mind Hamasien Akele Guzai and Seraye had almost full sovereignty since the collapse of Axumite empire

In ancient Africa there were two neighbors named ET and ER. One day a white man came to the continent and chained both men to one another. Immediately, Mr ET told the white man that he's not black, and that he would make sure that the rebellious Mr ER doesn't break free from the chains to his freedom. The white man deeply touched by Mr ET's loyalty and submissive behavior, he made him his informant while still keeping him chained to Mr ER.

Years later, after a long and grueling struggle, Mr ER finally broke the chains and freed himself and Mr ET, but the latter was found to be mentally chained to even recognize the freedom afforded to him. When Mr ET saw Mr ER celebrating his freedom, he asked "are you better off today than the years we were chained to one another?" Mr ER's response was, "I have freed myself, and I could have freed many more people like you if only they knew they were chained." :P

A country does not have to be developed to be an Imperialist Country.

What makes Ethiopia an Imperialist country is because it grabbed land by force and savagely subjugating the inhabitants to expand its territories.

And all that gibberish you are puking is because of Eritrea's Land, Eritrea's Red Sea and Eritrea's Ports. We all know what you salivate in your dreams "All Ethiopians, except for the Somali Ethiopians, Salivate about Eritrea's Properties - the Red Sea and the Ports day in and night out."

TGAA:

You, like your fellow neftegnas, may try to bend the truth and dilute Eritrea's Struggle for Independence from the primitive Ethiopian Colonial bondage. The Truth is "The Eritrea's Struggle for Independence from Ethiopian colonialism is a Just Struggle".

To reiterate again:

Eritrea's 30 years of Armed Struggle that started after 10 years of Ethiopia's subversive activities of killing Eritreans, dismantling Eritrea's parliament, Eritrea's institutions,... inside Eritrea is the Truest Armed Uprising against colonialism in the world EVER.

By sheer Determination, Sacrifice and Will, Eritreans Made History. Eritrea became an Independent Country in 1991 !!

But thanks to the Hasad Agame Isayas adventures and agenda, your type of statement is resurfacing again more boldly now than ever.

Yes it is the U.S. Foreign Policy Statement carried out by the US State Dept during the beginning of Cold War in 1952 in which U.S. Secretary John Foster Dulles said:

"From the point of view of justice, the opinion of the Eritrean people must receive consideration. Nevertheless, the strategic interests of the United States in the Red Sea Basin and world peace make it necessary that the country be linked with our ally Ethiopia" that triggered the forceful annexation of Eritrea by Ethiopia.

The U.S. Economical Interest was to control the expansion of the USSR influence in North East Africa, the Middle East, the Minor Asia and other factors. Eritrea was the best strategic place from which the U.S. can monitor and control, and is the reason the U.S. built one of the biggest Radar Station outside the U.S. in Eritrea.

It was during this period of time that US began pouring Economical Aid, Military Aid and Political Aid to primitive Ethiopia which is followed by other Western Nations. It is this "Infusion of Aid" that helps Ethiopia to remain as a nation. A nation built by grabbing lands and subjugating the inhabitants by force.

Finally, for once I agreed with Meles Zenawi's statement " የኢትዮጵያ ሶስት ሺ ዓመት ታሪክ እንቆቅልሽ 'ና ተረት ተረት" in reference to the fairy tale disney-like Ethiopia's 3000 years of history.

Sabur,

Just talk about the status of Eritrea after 1991 any thing you and your likes littering the site with falsified stories does not add up and doesn't provide the accurate history of the Eritrea province. You can't be allowed to exploit the current situation to further pile up false history. I don't know what [deleted] of land of Eritrea your are talking about. There was not a country called Eritrea, TPLF gave you a free a gift and you should be thankful if you like it. But I don't think so, because many Eritreans still proudly say that they are Ethiopians. If your are a Muslim Jibeha you could be angry about this. However, the future will be different.

Abere:

The following fact is what is driving you nuts. Isn't it ? There is nothing you can do about except for you to hang yourself.

"By sheer Determination, Sacrifice and Will, Eritreans Made History. Eritrea became an Independent Country in 1991."

Go Puke Now, this is a fact !!

Meanwhile keep nursing yourself and feel good about the fake, fairy-tale, disney-like claim of Ethiopia's 3000 years which is "የኢትዮጵያ ሶስት ሺ ዓመት ታሪክ እንቆቅልሽ 'ና ተረት ተረት"

Ignorance on its peak! Your ignorance has revealed that you are among the few who believe in fairytales. Eritrea has never been part of Ethiopia. It was federated with Ethiopia through a United Nations resolution issued on 2 December 1950 despite the warning of Ibrahim Sultan, who stated “The people of Eritrea do not accept any colonialism, black or white. Haile Slasie attempted to stretch the undersized tight skin of the country to cover the imagined colossal body of “great Ethiopia”. The [ deleted ] emperor waited until the right time to end the federal arrangement. His government terrorized active opposition leaders that resisted Ethiopian intrusion.

When it came to Eritrea, successive Ethiopian regimes believed that “we need its land, not its people”. The revolutionary vibration of Eritrea dismantled such oppression. History tells us that any Ethiopian regime that waged war against Eritrea ultimately dug its own grave. The inability of successive governments to contain the Eritrean resistance was one of the most important factors leading to their downfall. By 1991, a century of domination and oppression came to an end by a military victory. This opened the chapter for a better future and promised peace, stability, security, prosperity, dignity, hope, and confidence.

On May 29, 1991, Isaias Afwerki called upon the UN to “shoulder its moral responsibilities [to help conduct a free and fair referendum on Eritrean self-determination] without further delay.” In April 1992, the PGE set up a Referendum Commission, and it also passed the Eritrean Nationality Proclamation (No. 21/1993), which set the criteria of citizenship as a prerequisite for participation in the referendum. A computerized registration of voters was also organized. Later that year, the UN General Assembly authorized the Secretary-General to establish the UN Observer Mission to Verify the Referendum in Eritrea (UNGA Res 47/114 [16 December 1992]). The mission was deployed to Eritrea in January 1993, opening offices in Asmara, Adi Keih, Mendefera, and Keren. Inter alia, the UN would help with the technical task of assessing the conduct of voter registration, campaigning and polling, explaining the referendum process to the population, the launch of a civic education program to promote the right to popular participation, and the organization of international observers.

The EPLF made a wise decision to legitimize the military victory through a fair and just referendum. As a result, the official declaration of independence was made after the UN-monitored referendum in May 1993. On May 24th, 1993, Eritrea became the newest African state to join the camp of independent nations. On that day, independent Eritrea’s new flag was hoisted and Eritrea emerged as a sovereign and independent state. Case closed Mr. Idiot!
