GENERAL

Statement by Ms. Tekea Tesfamichael, President of the National Union of Eritrean Women during the High-Level Meeting on the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women Asmara, 1 October 2020

Mr. President,

Excellencies and Distinguished Colleagues,

I have the honor to address this august gathering, on behalf of the Eritrean women in the country and the diaspora.

25 years ago, we committed to a historic declaration in the most comprehensive, progressive and critical way to advance the agenda of women everywhere.

We made a solemn pledge, to ensure women’s equality and protect the rights and dignity of every woman. Beijing, however, is not only a commitment for women, but also a vision to build a better world, as without unleashing the boundless potential of women we cannot achieve peace and sustainable development.

Since Beijing, globally, progress has been achieved in alignment with the commitments of national policies and legal reforms by increasing programs for gender equality and women empowerment, enhancing access to education and health, combating violence against women as well as targeting harmful practices and discriminatory laws.

While progress can be hailed, it has been uneven and limited in its scope across regions and countries. No country has fully achieved the full aspirations of Beijing and many challenges remain. This should not deter our enthusiasm, to make further progress.

An important lesson from implementing the Beijing agenda is the elimination of the long term systemic structural barriers and negative patriarchal social norms, which remain a very challenging task.

Moving forward, we need to be cognizant of not only new challenges but on concretizing the existing achievements and avoid losing our hard -won gains. We have to remain committed to emancipate women from the yoke of structural discrimination and create conditions for their meaningful contributions in all spheres of life through implementing programs for economic, social and political empowerment.

Mr. President,

In Eritrea, the struggle for women’s equality has always been part and parcel of the struggle for self-determination and nation-building.

In the past 25 years, much progress has been made in transforming societal norms and practices and enacting laws to eliminate all forms of violence and discrimination against women. Through our grassroots advocacy and resolve and the commitment of the Government, underage marriage and female genital mutilation are illegal, equal access to land is guaranteed by law, and gender equality and empowerment of women is mainstreamed in national policies and programs.

Eritrea has been making a synergic approach among its governmental institutions for the coordinated implementation and monitoring of progress in achieving the Beijing Program of Action and in 2017, it conducted a comprehensive assessment for the status of gender equality and the empowerment of women across the board.

Our progress is still modest, and much remains to be done. We believe active community participation, leadership commitment, and strong grassroots organization will enable us to consolidate and further our gains.

In conclusion, let us collectively reaffirm our commitment in order to ensure a full implementation of the 12 critical areas of Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

You can count on the partnership of the Eritrean women and their organization—the National Union of Eritrean Women—to make the dream of Beijing a reality.

I thank you, Mr. President!

EU’s Ambassador, accompanied by Ministry of Agriculture & NARI officials as well as Vita and EU Delegation, visited Tselot village south-east of Asmara where farmers who have been using high-yield potato seed gave a first-hand account of their experiences. (Via: EU in Eritrea fb)

Primary production of SOP typically comes from potassium-rich brines, which require evaporation. Colluli is unique in that its salts are obtained in solid form, significantly reducing time between mining and revenue.

Keeping traditional culture alive & passing it from one generation to the next, isn't an easily accomplished mission. This is an everyday struggle which demands attention & effort from both the local grassroots communities and the national state, that act in a concerted manner.

These pictures are voicing loudly for the Eritrean people's cultural heritage preservation and it reflects on their past and present values, beliefs as well as the future aspirations to build a strong and united & an equality of ethnics guaranteeing Nation.

Eritrea concerned!

An abandoned oil tanker, anchored near the Yemeni port of Al Hudaydha, could cause the worst environmental disaster from spill of a million barrels of crude oil if the warring forces in Yemen fail to cooperate in the safe unloading of the tanker.

Eritrea Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband Market Research 2018-2020 Industry Key Players Zain KSA, Virgin Mobile Eritrea, Arabsat

(MENAFN - iCrowdNewsWire) Nov 13, 2019

WiseGuyReports.com  'Eritrea - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses  report has been added to its Research Database.

Scope of the Report:

Eritrea's mobile  network approaches national coverage. Eritrea's telecom sector operates under a state-owned monopoly for fixed and mobile services. Partly as a result of such restrictions on competition, the country has the least developed telecommunications market in Africa. Mobile penetration as of mid-2017 was only about 7.4%, while fixed-line internet use barely registers.

This is exacerbated by the very low use of computers, with only about 3% of households having a computer, and most of these being in the capital, Asmara. Although the provision of internet services is open to competition, less than 2% of households have access to the internet. As a result such growth as there is in the mobile and mobile internet sectors. The national telco, the Eritrean Telecommunication Services Corporation (EriTel), continues to roll out a 3G network which provides basic internet access to the majority or Eritreans...

REMARKS MADE BY FOREIGN MINISTER OSMAN SALEH OF THE STATE OF ERITREA AT THE RECEPTION HELD IN HONOR OF HIS EXCELLENCYʼS WORKING VISIT TO JAPAN ON TUESDAY 26 MARCH 2019 FROM 18H00 to 20H30 AT IMPERIAL HOTEL TOKYO

Chairperson Honorable Ichiro AISAWA
AU - Japan Parliamentary Friendship League,

State Minister Minoru KIUCHI
Ministry of Environment,

President Tetsuro YANO
AFRECO,

Director General Shigeru USHIO
Department of African Affairs
Ministry of Foreign Affairs,

Members of the Diplomatic Corps,

Honorable guests

Compatriots and friends present,

ኮንባንዋ

Good evening,

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko abdication from the throne is 36 days away on 30 April 2019. Hence, allow me on the onset of my remark to take this opportunity - availed to me in this evening - to wish their Majesties and the Imperial family good health and long life as well as to foresee a continued peace and prosperity to Japan during this historic moment of transition.

Please accept our heart felt thanks and deep gratitude for the kind hospitality and warm welcome extended to us since our arrival here in Tokyo. We are happy to be with you in spring when the Cherry blossom flowers. My colleague - Mr. Yemane Gebreab, political advisor to President ISAIAS - and myself are here at the invitation of the Government of Japan for a four-day working visit.

Peace and cooperation pact was signed between Eritrea and Ethiopia on July 8, 2018. The people of Eritrea and Ethiopia defeated the long war and have won peace now after more than six decades of a conflict era, which entailed unparalleled sacrifices never seen in the modern history of mankind. And this new development has exerted greater weight on the regionʼs current political, economic, cultural, and security dynamics as its implications progress on a positive trajectory engulfing all the political forces and countries of the region.

All eyes are now on the integration of East African countries within the region and to the global markets. East Africa is finally at a doorstep of a new page of its history - writing down the unfolding of an epoch of peace, stability, prosperity and regional integration.

Given this historic paradigm shift in our part of the continent of Africa, we are here for four days in a mission to seek ways and means of mutually starting up of the building of a new all weather bridge of partnership connecting Eritrea and Japan.

We believe, at this important juncture of our history Japanʼs public and private sector should positively consider active participation by creating robust business tie-ups, implementations of connectivity infrastructures, SDGs and peace building and to use these mechanisms of collaboration as a long term leverage to restore sustainable relationships with the growing economy and promising future market in East Africa.

We are looking forward to a constructive engagement with Foreign Minister Taro KONO and other politicians, public and private officials, business leaders, mayors, academics, and compatriots during our four-day stay in Japan.

Last but not least, let me also take this opportunity to thank Kanagawa Prefecture, Odawara City, Oiso Town and Hakone Town for their continued support and friendship which is being mutually undertaken with Eritrea under the “Host Town Initiative” towards a successful participation of our athletes in TOKYO2020 and beyond.

Success breeds success. I extend our invitation to all present here to pay a visit to Eritrea.

We look forward to your support,

Thank you again!
