Now they can't bring anything forward as an argument other than pure character assassination (campaign) of the PM and have naught with respect to policy arguments against the incumbent party.

The moment they start recognizing their failure they also understand that they are out of argument and don't know what to say about their cause anymore in front of the people they claim to stand for.

Bottom line, if you're run out of argument, then better realize that you have also lost the game sooner than later for your own sake.
