Joint Graduation Ceremonies of 33rd Round of National Service & 11th Commencement of HAMAMOS Technical School was held this morning in Sawa. President Isaias applauded the excellence of the graduates in this exceptional year eclipsed by the global threat of the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Isaias further underlined that GOE's primary objectives in these trying times remained upgrading & bolstering its all-rounded capabilities & effectiveness to the requisite level so as to fully control the spread of COVID-19 & all other contagious diseases that may occur.

The lessons gleaned, expertise nurtured & equipment procured remain inadequate in relation to the magnitude of the threat posed by this vicious global pandemic.
Pre. Isaias noted.
Minister Amina Nurhusein, for her part, elaborated on GOE's strategy to severe spread of COVID-19

Sawa: A Guarantee for National Security and Prosperity

Articles

For 26 years, Eritrean youth have been going to Sawa as part of their national service. In July 1994, Sawa hosted the first round of young Eritreans who were enlisted to perform their national service.

Over time, Sawa has evolved to become an institution that is vital for national development. It is a school that caters to the personal development of young Eritreans and prepares them to take on tasks, to fulfill their national duties as citizens. In short, it has become a rite of passage for young Eritrean boys and girls.

The establishment of Sawa increased Eritrea’s defense capacity, empowered the capacity of Eritrean youth, brought together Eritrea’s diverse population, and helped develop civic ideals and loyalty to the nation.

National service is mandatory for all Eritreans, between the ages of 18 and 50. Sawa and the national service, have enabled the Eritrean youth to inherit the revolutionary values of the EPLF that liberated the country. The revolutionary generation has delivered an independent country that is free from foreign domination and internal division, which is an honor to the current and future generations of the Eritrean society and Sawa has been established to bridge the past achievements and future visions and missions.

One of the objectives of the national service- as outlined in the ‘National Service Proclamation No. 82/1995’- is to establish people-based strong defense force to assure the existence of free and sovereign Eritrea. Sawa has played a great role in passing on to the next generation, the culture of heroism that the freedom fighters of Eritrea demonstrated during the armed struggle. It has created courageous, responsible, hardworking, disciplined and ever-ready generations; that participate in the defense and reconstruction of the country. Well trained and disciplined youth, are crucial for the national security and prosperity. The human aspect is accorded a central position, in the security and development strategy of Eritrea. In this regard, Sawa can be considered as a maximizer of human resources and enabler of the people-oriented strategy of the country.

Another important objective of the national service in Eritrea is to provide regular and continuous military training and vocational training, to promote physical fitness and improve vocational skills of the Eritrean youth. In Sawa, four seemingly different but complementary areas are taught - military, political, academic and vocational. The goal is to produce versatile youth, that can perform various tasks. The availability of trained and organized human resources is a prime requirement, to accomplish military and civilian tasks. In its 26 years of existence, Sawa has produced hundreds of thousands of strong, intelligent and capable youth.

Cementing the unity of the Eritrean people, by promoting unity and nationalism and by eradicating sub-national attitudes is another main objective of the national service. Sawa is a guarantor and promoter of unity and reflects the unity of the people of Eritrea. It cultivates nationalism and unity among the Eritrean youth. In Sawa, Eritrean youth from different parts of the country and all walks of life come together and learn about one another, their country and its history. Through interaction with one another, the youth are able to have a common understanding which serves as a basis for unity.

The unity of the Eritrean people is rooted in a long tradition of peaceful and harmonious coexistence, which was reinforced by the EPLF during the long struggle for independence and Sawa added its own input to cement the unity. The peace and stability that prevails in Eritrea, is the outcome of the strong national unity.

Unity and nationalism are not static events but dynamic processes, that demand continuous effort. Sawa and national service provide a great service and guarantee the unity and nationalism of the Eritrean people, by rejecting all divisive attitudes and activities. In Eritrea, the military and civilian composition is representative of the Eritrean society. National and military service is shared equally, across all segments of the Eritrean society.

Sawa and national service are regarded as a cornerstone, for the security and prosperity of Eritrea. They provide the confidence needed, for the country to develop and prosper. It holds a special place in the collective psyche of the Eritrean youth and is widely viewed as an essential component of the Eritrean identity. As Sawa is getting ready to graduate its 33rd round of trainees and receive the 34th round, it is imperative to highlight that it will continue to serve as a guarantee for the national security and prosperity of Eritrea by building young Eritreans’ tenacity, heroism and inventiveness.

Why are you scribbling in amharic, MLLT rat? You know the amara and others hate your guts too, right? No amount of mouthing off to us using their language, will fool them once again to come to your aid. This is not 1998, where you can dupe them with: "Ethiopia has been invaded" BS. Infact, you're guilty of occupying their land too.

You MLLT's and the derg have one thing in common, in our eyes. You both salivate about, what doesn't belong to you. Sovereign Eritrean lands! We wiped the derg out of our country, using its own weapons. We'll wipe you off the face of the Earth, using our own modern armaments!

And quit with your cry me a river theatrics about the fate of Eritrean women, whom you would love to violate, had you had the chance to lay your filthy hands on. You people rape your own 8 year old daughters, for Christ's sake!

Sawa at 33

Two years ago President Isaias Afwerki announced he was going on an official visit to neighboring Ethiopia, his very first visit in almost 25 years following the rapprochement with Ethiopia. What made the announcement significant, was that the President chose to make it in Sawa at the graduation ceremony of the 31st round of trainees. His message was greeted with jubilation, from the crowd.

Fast forward two years and the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, visited Sawa and its environs during a two-day working visit to Eritrea, becoming the first ever leader to visit Sawa.

Sawa occupies a central place, among Eritrean families. It is serving as a melting pot, for Eritrea’s nine ethnic groups. It is a reminder of how much responsibility the place bears. Since its inception, it has produced a formidable defense force, remarkable students and diligent working people.

Eritrea believes, that at the heart of development is the role of the youth in shaping the future. Young people have a role in engaging people at the grassroots level and a role in communicating the goals to a wider society. To do this well they need structured mechanisms for participation in decision-making, especially in areas that have a clear impact on young people. That is where Sawa comes in.

Sawa was established in 1994, following the declaration of the National Service, to play a leading role in developing the skills of the youth and initiate on-the-job training to enhance human resources and build the capacity required to achieve sustainable and holistic development. The reform of the education system in 2003 reinforced this policy, by introducing a modern and effective teaching and learning methodology; that is student-centered and designed to stimulate students’ active participation and promote teacher-student interaction.

The final year of secondary school education at 12th grade has been conducted in Sawa’s Warsay- Yikaalo Secondary School, since 2003. Here, students from all over the country live under one-roof and are given equal opportunities of education, free of charge. At the end of the academic year, they all sit for their final national school leaving examination and those who pass join one of the eight colleges spread all over the country. For instance, 30% and 37% of the students who took their national examination in 2008 and 2009 respectively joined these colleges. Those who scored below-average grades were given technical and vocational training courses in Sawa, to help them acquire skills that are desperately needed in the nation building endeavors. By 2010, a total of 80,000 students had taken their national examination at Sawa’s Warsay-Yikaalo Secondary School.

Sawa produces academically and militarily competent young men and women, responsible for the development and security of the country. To date, 33 rounds of young Eritreans have graduated from Sawa.

In a country with a close-knit society, Sawa is a perfect place for the youth. For the youth of Eritrea, going to Sawa is a rite of passage. It is a year when each participant gets to reflect, get a sense of belongings outside of one’s family. For that twelve month, your family is those you meet in Sawa.

The first in my family, I was part of the 22nd round. Since then four of my siblings have gone to Sawa. We are about to send our fifth sibling, next year. For me personally, my stay in Sawa was one of the best experiences of my life.

To this day I still keep in touch with everyone I met there -- students, teachers and trainers. Now, whenever I travel outside Asmara to visit other towns of the country, I have someone I met in Sawa to contact.

A friend of mine who aptly calls graduates of Sawa ‘Sawa man’ and ‘Sawa woman’ once said: these formidable young citizens have set in motion events that still sustain the Eritrean society in many ways. If you go to a clinic, a Sawa man or woman is there; if you go to schools, trenches, development project areas, cultural show centers, research centers in Eritrea, you see millions of Sawa men and women who are in charge of their own futures.

I would like to end by saying congratulations to the current round of graduates, for successfully completing their 12th grade education and military training.
