The largest island, also called Socotra, is about 95% of the landmass of the archipelago, It lies some 240 km (150 mi) east of the Horn of Africa and 380 km (240 mi) south of the Arabian Peninsula, The island is very isolated and through the process of speciation, a third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet, It has been described as the most alien-looking place on Earth,
It’s not known when the first inhabitants arrived on the Islands but there is no possible doubt that the Somalis were in Socotra when Ottomans and the British arrived and colonised it.
In the early 1800s the British set up a protective area around the Somali sea, northern Somalia, Socotra and Southern port of Aden, Then in 1967 Southern Yemen became independent as the People's Republic of South Yemen and Socotra islands were handed over to South Yemen although they are much closer to Somalia and the earliest inhabitants of Socotra were the Somalis, However, in 2010 Somalia respectfully requested the United Nations to determine the status of the Socotra archipelago

According to Yemen government statistics most of the inhabitants are people from Al-Mahrah tribe, who are of Southern Arabian descent from Al Mahrah Governorate and are said to be closely related with the Qara and Mahra groups of Southern Arabia, followed by a small number of residents of Somali origin, In addition, the island is inhabited by various black African people, who are believed to be descendants of runaway slaves.
Yemenis are primitive and pathological liars, they don't know anything about Socotra and its population The Black African population makes up the vast majority of the Socotra population not Mahrah tribe and It has a population of less than 10,000 not 50,000.
