ECLC Farms: Creating Jobs, Transferring Skills and Alleviating Challenges

The commencement of integrated and vast agricultural activities in Gerset, Aligidir, Fanko-Rawi and Fanko-Tsum’e, Goluj, Ketai and other areas of Laelai-Gash by Eritrea’s Crops and Livestock Corporation (ECLC) has opened employment opportunities, skill transfer, technical assistance and exchange of farm-related experiences to farmers and graduates from colleges and training institutions.

When the farm projects were at their initial stage ten years ago, limited farm activities were carried out by inexperienced workers who gradually acquired skills through practical engagement in the fields.

Ever since 2014, when graduates in agriculture were assigned to the farm project in great numbers, graduates from Hamelmalo College of Agriculture, Adi-Halo and other institutes have been deployed to the farm zone. Currently, the farm project is being run by 1,600 well-trained experts in the field of agriculture and animal science.

The input of the experts who are assigned to work in their fields of study has been substantial in increasing agricultural produce and the number of livestock.

The graduates have been able to develop their competence, because of the mentoring of senior agronomists and ample opportunities they were provided to hone their skills in the last five years. The veterinary science graduates have been providing services in all areas of the farm zone; including distant areas around Ketai.

Mr. Hailezgi Habte, manager of Southwest Farm Zone in Gash-Barka region, said:

What we do as regards creating employment opportunity for the inhabitants of the different farm areas is quite impressive. The people of the area are mostly nomads and they have never been accustomed to farming. Thus, we have enabled them, particularly the women, to acquire farming skills and inculcated in them the culture of working in the fields.

A number of women have been able to address their economic challenges by working in the farm fields. The Government has provided the residents of the area ample employment opportunities, and the veteran women who work in the farms have been crucial in influencing their peers to work in the farms and improve their living standards.

Currently, 1,000 individuals, 90% of whom are women, are working in different farms; at times the number reaches 3,000. The launching of the farm project has generally enabled the residents of Fesko, Gulsum, Gerset and Fanko to earn their living with ease. Some of the farm workers have become independent farmers owing to the experiences they acquired while working in the farm fields.

The ECLC has been providing pesticides to farmers in six sub-zones of the Gash-Barka region and plans to give them improved seed in the future. The corporation has also been giving veterinary service in the remotest areas of the region. Agricultural experts have been giving technical support to farmers. All services related to livestock health and agriculture have enabled the farmers to engage more in such activities.

The sub-zones of Shambiko, Molqi, Barentu, Tesenei, Goluj, Haykota and Lalai-Gash have benefited from the freely provided veterinary medicines and pesticides.

Horticulture experts deployed to work in seedlings nursery station setup in Gerset are making a difference in the provision of orange, mango, lemon and other seedlings that have been planted in the farm fields around Fanko-Rawi and Fanko-Tsum’e dams.

We are looking forward to nurturing more seedlings in a bid to meet the demands of farmers,

All the sub-zones under the Southwest Farm Zone in the region are integrated. Even though the farm areas have their own work divisions, the integration among the different plantations has been instrumental in the sharing of material and human resources. For instance, the livestock in all areas have an easy access to animal feed in such a way that the surplus in one area is shared with another farm area that has a deficit.

Green animal feed such as alfalfa, millet and maize are cultivated in all the farm areas. In times of need, dried animal feed is sent to Halhale.

Natural compost processed for one year has been utilized as fertilizer to prevent degradation of land fertility. The fertility of Adi-Omar Farm, for instance, has been regularly maintained through natural fertilizers and cultivation of commercial crops that are essential in enriching land fertility. To that end, around 500 hectares of sesame was cultivated last year.

The free veterinary medicines, pesticides and technical support from agriculture experts have tremendously alleviated challenges of farmers. The Corporation is always ready to provide the farmers with necessary medicine and other facilities. Since all the farm areas are endowed with abundant water resources, more and more plantation and farm activities can be carried out.

The impact of the farm projects in improving the living standard of the local inhabitants around the farm areas is evident. The ample amount of water in the reservoirs has been utilized for agriculture and livestock.

Herders in the area have been benefiting from the water resources. Natural grazing lands such as those in Ketai have been sources of animal feed for a large number of livestock. Bademit Dam has also been easing the challenges of deficit of water for livestock.

Women and men with no prior experience working in farms have now learned new skills to earn their living. What is more, the people who are living around Gerset, Tesenei, Fanko, Aligidir and other areas who have been working in the farm fields administered by ECLC come from almost all ethnic groups of Eritrea.

The first Goldmine in Eritrea was opened in 1902, in a place called Midri-Zien. Other Goldmine sites soon followed in Adi-Shimagle, Adi-Konxi, Adi-Nfas, Awgaro.

After 1931, increase in price of Gold led to opening of about 27 Goldmine sites.



Between 1936-1940: 423kg of Gold, 2700 Ton of Iron Ore, 11 tons of Mica was Mined. In 1929, 2640 tons of Potash was mined.

Isaias Afewerki: The Founding Father of Modern Eritrea

Whether you like it or not, agree or disagree, PIA and Shaebia are the cohesive factor for Eritrea’s Unity and Integrity.

IT IS common knowledge that President Isaias Afwerki (PIA) is the founding father of the Eritrean State. The objective evidence for that assertion is overwhelming. The Eritrean Liberation Front, with whom PIA started as a combatant, was riddled with tribalism and sectarianism in the 1960s and early 70s. It was only when he and his comrades split from the ELF and founded the EPLF that the Eritrean people became united and shed tribal and religious thinking. His record of accomplishment as the Secretary General of the EPLF and the first President of Eritrea is extraordinary.

PIA truly has been and still is Eritrea’s “Indispensable Man,” the essential man not only in winning independence but also in successfully keeping Eritrea united and sovereign during its early vulnerable years.

People today forget how close the Eritrean sovereignty came to being put at great risk as a result of the extraordinary betrayals witnessed during the Ethiopian regime’s (Woyane) Western-backed invasion.

PIA was critical in preventing the collapse of the Eritrean State. Without his great skill as a unifier and without his charisma and vision, Eritrea would not exist today. It is a record of leadership without parallel in Africa or the Middle East. For that, he will always occupy a permanent place in the pantheon of Eritrean heroes.

He is also the essential man in guiding Eritrea at this juncture of its history. He has proven to be incorruptible. He leads by example. He is clearly the greatest Eritrean of his age and has been an inspirational figure worthy of both admiration and affection for nearly half a century now since he interrupted his university studies and dedicated his life to freeing his people.

Resolute, determined and possessing a backbone made of steel, PIA is the rarest of men, a realistic visionary who combines a realistic view of human nature with a vision of what a free and united Eritrea could be for posterity. He has dedicated his entire life to making that vision a reality.

The West has always tried to undermine leaders of developing countries who can’t be bought and jealously guard their country’s resources while keeping their people united. In Eritrea’s case, they have tried everything to bring the government and its people down using their favorite useful idiot, Woyane.

Although no one is above reproach, we have seen how Woyanes and their lackeys attack PIA, tegadeltis and even Hamid Idriss Awate (you can expect those attacks around September 1) as an indirect and sometimes direct way of attacking the very notion of a sovereign Eritrea.

For all intents and purposes, an attack on PIA is an attack on the very notion of a sovereign Eritrea. For that reason, he will always be us and we will always be him.

One patient has recovered fully after standard tests at the National Laboratory and was released from hospital today.

This brings the number of recovered patients to-date to thirty-eight (38).

The number of confirmed cases in the country to-date is thirty nine (39).

As underlined last week, the positive and preliminary achievements obtained so far reflect the effectiveness of the medical and other crucial measures and guidelines that have been pursued within the overall GOE strategy of prevention.

But this important milestone should not induce complacency. The grave threat of the pandemic has not been eradicated. We are not out of the woods yet.

In the event, we urge every citizen to continue to fully adhere to, and diligently implement, the GOE Guidelines in force until the ongoing task of detailed and comprehensive assessment to gauge the spread of the pandemic in the entire country with full certainty is accomplished.

It is rare to get access to Eritrea, which is considered one of the world's most repressive and secretive states. A BBC team were recently allowed to visit to cover a story about healthcare and the photos from their trip give a glimpse of what life is like there:



Despite the thousands of young Eritreans who flee the country each month, the capital city, Asmara, was buzzing with life. Here young Asmarinos enjoy their evening after drinking coffee in the centre of the city.



Eritrea has been criticised for its levels of freedom of expression. There is no privately owned domestic media. Rights groups say that government journalists arrested in 2009 and 2011 are still imprisoned in solitary confinement without any prospect of a trial. But the ruling party's Yemane Ghebreab said the government-owned media was able to give a "forum for different opinions".



There are many large murals around the country, reminding people of the need for self-reliance. Eritrea had a long struggle for independence which it gained from Ethiopia in 1993. It also fought a border war with Ethiopia between 1998 and 2000.



On the outskirts of Asmara lies this tank graveyard, with old Ethiopian tanks, trucks and other military vehicles captured during decades of conflict.



On the road from Asmara to the port city of Massawa, one drives through the mountainous green belt, a lush part of the country which is a haven for wildlife.



This old bank in Massawa was used as a shelter during the conflict with Ethiopia - and has been left untouched as another reminder.



Asmara's leafy boulevards and modernist buildings are also a reminder of its Italian colonial past. The country was occupied by the Italians for nearly 50 years until 1941.



Italy's fascist dictator Benito Mussolini wanted Asmara to be the "Piccola Roma" (Little Rome) in Africa, as he planned a new Roman Empire in the 1930s. Cinema Roma was built in 1937, its facade covered in marble. The cinema is still in working order and boasts a stylish cafe inside.



This is the oldest chemist in Asmara, built in 1897. Most of the interior has been left untouched since its construction. The till, purchased in the same year, is still used today.

I love coming to work every day, it is the most beautiful place to work,

one of the chemists said.

This was built by the Italians and they know how to build beautiful buildings. Asmara has changed a lot but it's important we keep our history - without our history we are nothing.

The Fiat Tagliero building in Asmara is a petrol station designed by Italian architect Giuseppe Pettazzi. Completed in 1938, it was meant to resemble an aeroplane. We were told by officials that planners at the time insisted each wing should be supported by pillars. However, Pettazzi reportedly held a gun to the builder's head and threatened to kill them if the supports were not removed.



The most common wedding season in Eritrea is in January - which is supposed to be when farmers' workloads are at their quietest. Hundreds of Eritreans from Asmara and across the world came together to celebrate this couple's marriage in a large hall awash with food and drink.



Eritrea's healthcare system has improved dramatically over recent years. Dr Berhane Haile (not pictured) from the health ministry says the government covers the medical bills for poor people.

To be productive, you have to be healthy - so the government takes health as a priority in the country,

he says.



In hard-to-reach rural areas, healthcare supplies are sometimes transported by camel. Much of Eritrea's healthcare success has come from mobilising communities to raise awareness about various diseases and identify issues early on.
