WHO's not invited? World Health Organization seeks permission to participate in China's investigation into Covid-19 origins

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that Beijing is investigating the origins of the novel coronavirus that first appeared in Wuhan, but the agency has so far been prevented from participating in the probe.

The UK provided more than 122,000 coronavirus tests on the last day of April, passing the government's target, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said.

Mr Hancock said the target of 100,000 tests per day was an "audacious goal", but testing was necessary "for getting Britain back on her feet".

The figure includes home test kits counted when they were dispatched, which may not yet have been processed.

Italy reports 1,965 new cases of coronavirus and 269 new deaths.
Total of 207,428 cases and 28,236 deaths . For the sixth time since coronavirus outbreak, Italy has reported more new recovered patients than new cases. PM Conte says professional sports teams can resume training on May 18. Italy's economy shrank by 4.7% in the first quarter of 2020, a bigger drop than during 2008 financial crisis (2.8%).

UK reports 6,201 new cases of coronavirus and 739 new deaths.
Total of 177,454 cases and 27,510 deaths.

For the first time since coronavirus outbreak, the UK has conducted more than 100,000 tests in 24 hours.

WHO says COVID-19 emergency declaration gave world 'enough time'

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus gave a robust defence on Friday of his and the World Health Organization’s (WHO) “timely” actions in declaring the new coronavirus an international health emergency at the end of January. The Jan. 30 declaration was made in “enough time for the rest of the world to respond” because there were at that stage only 82 cases of infection and no deaths outside China, Tedros told a virtual media briefing at the WHO’s Geneva headquarters.Tedros said the WHO, which is seeking to lead the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic, had used the days before declaring the global emergency as time to visit China to learn more about the new virus.

Djibouti reported 8 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s total confirmed cases to 1,097. It has reported two deaths and 672 recoveries.

Both Somaliland and Puntland confirmed the first deaths in the region from the coronavirus.

Ethiopia

The two new cases in Ethiopia have a history of travel from the Kenyan border town of Moyale and Puntland, Somalia.

Uganda

Uganda’s coronavirus cases rise to 83 as two Kenyan truckers test positive for COVID-19.

South Sudan

In the last 24 hours, 299 samples were tested & results released. Of these, 10 tested positive for COVID19 Out of the new cases identified, 9 are male & 1 is female.
