Wow, wow! You gotta be kidding me? If I remember correctly, the building was built only about 25 years ago. The most expensive marble available in the country was used and the curtain wall was imported from Italy. The exterior was designed to emulate axumite and lalibela architecture. If I am not mistaken, the contractor was Varnero and the architect Sileshi Consult. Too bad! There is this horrible misconception of “new” in our society that you have to tear down the existing and start from scratch. The same has been true when new governments come in. The same is happening now with this building. I wonder if the site is part of Eagle Hills residential development. Even though I don’t like the brutalist Shipping Lines building, I am sure it could have been remodeled to accommodate new function and new look.

Before taking that office he has sailed for many years as an engineer and chief engineer of one of the ships.Selam/ wrote: ↑31 Jan 2020, 09:53Wow, wow! You gotta be kidding me? who the fk is ambachew? who care what ambachew feel?
selam: you are right: all the building in the row starting from Ethiopian shipping lines are turning into dust.
This is very annoying.Probably billions birr is needed to construct this attractive buildings. what is their motives? whatever project they have, no need to dismantle buildings or whatever that costed huge sum of money.

See below Eagle Hills building on the site. To me, it is just a random tower that doesn’t have any Ethiopian character and identity. You could build the same crap in Khartoum, Kenya or Dubai and no one would remember where they first saw it. It’s an international style without any sign of locality. I never liked the rigid Shipping Lines building specially after that monstrous railway flyover came right in front of it and diminished its significance. But I would still prefer that building over this identity-less condominium. And you can’t believe how exorbitant the price is. 1 bedroom condo is about $230k and that’s US dollar not birr. Add to it $300-500 monthly management fee. Appalling!

selam: I don't get the point? here we are in need of more money to improve roads, housing and the like. In the countryside, most of houses are made from mud and sticks, we need the money to reach their. By demolishing once successfully finalized projects here and there, we can't afford the expense that incur. This is just one typical example; I can show many similar situations where the government is involved in destroying buildings, roads which were once errected with large sum of money, and surprisingly they are to replicate what had been destroyed. This is becoming daily routine in our country.
As far as we are hugely immersed in financial debt and still we are looking for someone to lend us, the government should have cost effective strategies to minimize unwanted expenses.

The ideas of real estate is being used as violence against cultures, people, history. Yes i do agree on building when there is shortage. Why these builders emphasis on cities is to fill individual's pocket only, it is the most laziest way of making money as "Kirai Sebsabi". All these owners do is get monthly earnings without lifting a finger, they can just sit and collect money. That spot where this building existed, people used to live there and pushed out so that these individuals can fatten their pockets. What is odd is that, in a country like Ethiopia where the only One city we have where Addis Abeba is being used for battle ground is an alarm how pro ethnic generations growing and developing Ethiopia is the last on their mind where they could have created another Addis-like citites all over the nation. They don't follow examples of developed nations who have many cities in their nations. Where as pro ethnic fanatics, have eyes only one struggling in a city like Addis Abeba. This is really shameful and it shows how lazy generations are created quick gain money scheme, they don't care about their nation.
Besides if you are trying to boost tourism, you don't destroy historical buildings, like other nations I go to visist as tourist, I see that the clever nations repair the historical buildings in order to get tourism income.
Indeed, finally Ethiopia has become the worst not only the World but from Africa, while other Africans had already woken up in the past 27 years, Ethiopia had been regressing the past 50 years.

It is indeed sad to hear this. Eng. Kassahoun Bekele, my Father, was one who did the Structural Design. It was one of his works that he proudly lists amongst others. Although he is not alive to witness this, I feel as though they have taken away from his legacy. I wish they have placed the LaGare One Building elsewhere.

The bland and pale LaGare One Building is no match for the grand and meaningful Old Shipping Lines Building.
