A glimpse at the prehistory of Eritrea

About Eritrea - History & Culture

The prehistory of Eritrea is noticeably attention-grabbing and this could be owing to its Geo-strategic location, heterogeneous landscape and favorable habitat in the Horn of Africa.

With its more than 1200 kilometer long coastal territory in the Red Sea, the country’s topography is represented by the lowlands’ arid and semi-arid areas and highland escarpments with a fertile land and favorable environment. This part of the horn has been a magnet to life, millions of years ago. For example, the land of the present day Eritrea attracted large mammals from the Arabian land about 27 million years ago. This time frame represents part of the African mammal evolutionary history, which is substantially unknown to science.

Being part of the extended African Rift valley — the Eritrean Danakil Depression was home to ancient humans, which is vital in understanding the cradle of humanity. It has a remarkable importance in understanding the evolution of our ancestors during the Plio-Pleistocene times (5 million — 11,000 years ago). The oldest and most conceivable evidence of human origin (based on stone tools) is known from the Eritrean Danakil Depression of the Engel Ela - Ramud Basin, a place which is about 30 km south of Buia and less than 500 km far from where Professor Donald Johanson found almost a complete fossil evidence of Australopithecus afarensis (known as “Lucy”) from Ethiopia 40 years ago.

The evidence of anatomically modern humans from the Eritrean Danakil Depression is coming from the site of Buia in the Northern Red Sea Region, which is 31 km far from the Gulf of Zula. The stunning sedimentary deposits from this Basin preserve fossil evidence of anatomically modern humans and large mammalian fauna, which are dated back about 1.0 million years. Amongst the most prominent localities include Maebele, Dioli, Aalad, Aalad-Amo and Mulhuli-Amo. The discovery of the complete human skull (~1.0 million years old) from Aalad (also known as H0m0-site), was a scientific breakthrough. To date, evidence of a complete skull of H0m0sapien between 1.4 million years to 650,000 years is scarce in Africa. This unique fossil finding from Buia filled the gap between H0m0- erectus (1.4 million) and H0m0- heidelbergensis (650,000 years). Later on, modern humans adapted to the coastal and maritime environment of the Red Sea about 125, 000 years ago. This shows our direct ancestors lived in the region millions of years back, thanks to the vivid and well documented evidence from the continental and coastal landscapes of the extended Eritrean Danakil Depression.

The later historic period is roughly represented by the evidence of rock art. Rock art is human-made markings placed on the natural stone and show humanity’s cultural, cognitive, and artistic beginnings. It further shows the emergence of human’s symbolic behavior before the advent of writing. Evidence of rock art is well documented across the country and the most prominent sites among these include Adi-Älewti, Iyago, Karibosa, Saro, Mai-äini and Quarura. The Eritrean rocks are represented by different color pigments and figures of animals, human and geometric styles and symbolize the evidence of society’s socio-economic and cultural way of life.

The ancient history of Eritrea is characterized by different dynamics of historic events. Amongst these include the emergence of complex agro-pastoral societies and the urban civilizations on the highlands and lowlands of Eritrea. Furthermore, Eritrea is the birthplace of ancient and socioculturally highly diversified civilizations in the region. The Medieval Period, is among the most intricate slice of our historic records. This period encompasses the introduction and foundation of the leading religions in our region, Christianity around 4th and Islam 7th century AD.

The recent history of Eritrea is primarily linked to the unprecedented struggle for liberation, preceded by desolate and successive colonial times. This represents the dark and centuries-long clutches of colonialism and their colossal impacts. The gallant Eritrean people, opposed the dominance and successive colonial oppression. This part of our history is labeled as Recent History, which is a history bounded by hardship, resistance, and solidarity throughout time.

Eritrea has experienced a rich and diverse history, overwrought with intense periods of difficulty. Present-day Eritrea, with its diverse culture, is not by any means an overnight creation. In this regard, the process of the historical evolution of our society started over millions of years from the cradle of humanity shown by the fossil legacy of our ancestors.

Dec. 04, 2019

Cross Country: CWSA RELEASE

https://golobos.com/news/2019/12/4/kela ... untry.aspx

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— In the 2019 NCAA cross country season, there was no one better than University of New Mexico junior Weini Kelati.

And in a season in which Kelati had acquired award after award at every level, on Wednesday morning the Collegiate Women Sports Awards announced that the Lobo had achieved the highest honor for a cross country student-athlete by naming Kelati the Honda Sports Award winner for cross country.

The Honda Award signifies the
best of the best in collegiate athletics
with the winner chosen by administrators at over 1,000 NCAA member schools.
This is such a great honor for not only Weini but also The University of New Mexico and our proud state,
UNM head cross country coach Joe Franklin said.
This Honda Award for cross country is the highest honor a student-athlete can achieve. Weini has worked very hard to achieve everything she has accomplished in the classroom and on the cross country course.
With the declaration, Kelati becomes just the second UNM cross country runner to be selected for the award, joining Ednah Kurgat who won in 2017. Kelati is the third student-athlete in New Mexico history to win the Honda Sports Award in any sport, joining women's golf's Caroline Keggi, who won the Honda Sport Award for golf for the 1986-87 season.

The UNM runner and two-time Honda Award finalist was chosen out of four finalists including Alicia Monson from Wisconsin and Taylor Werner and Katie Izzo from Arkansas.
I am so grateful to be selected for this prestigious award and am excited for the future with another season of cross country still to go in my collegiate career,
Kelati said upon learning that she had won.
It is great to follow in the steps of my teammate Ednah Kurgat in being honored by Honda. It is always amazing to represent UNM and I am proud to be a Lobo.
Kelati compiled a spectacular junior campaign, winning four of the five races she appeared in and closing the cross country season winning her last three races, culminating in her first cross country national championship on Nov. 23.

Additionally, in her final three races of the season, the junior posted substantial margins of victories.

In winning her second straight Mountain West Championship in 19:11.2, Kelati broke the MW record by 26 seconds and finished 49 seconds ahead of the runner-up. In the NCAA Mountain Regional, Kelati cruised to her second straight regional title with a showing of 18:57.8, finishing 57 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher. Against the top runners in the country at the NCAA Championship, she finished over nine (9.6) seconds ahead of Monson to capture her first cross country championship in 19:47.5.

She opened the season with a win at the Joe Piane – Notre Dame Invitational, winning the Blue Division individual title in 16:01.61, 12.12 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher. Her lone second-place result came at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, finishing behind Monson.

Of note, in the last two cross country seasons, Kelati has finished no lower than second in her 10 races, accumulating seven individual titles and three runner-up finishes.

This season, Kelati earned accolade after accolade, being named Mountain West Women's Peak Athlete of the Week twice (Oct. 8, Oct. 22), USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Athlete of the Week twice (Oct. 7, Nov. 4) and was named the MW Women's Conference Athlete of the Year for the second straight year. She earned All-Mountain West Cross Country First Team, USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Region and claimed her third all-America honor in cross country, bringing her career All-Americans to 10 amongst cross country and track. Furthermore, she was named the Mountain Region Athlete of the Year and the USTFCCCA National Women's Athlete of the Year en route to now being named the Honda Sports Award winner.

Kelati will be presented with her award at an on-campus presentation at a date to be decided and all Honda Spot Award winners become a finalist for the prestigious 2020 Honda Cup presented in June.

The CWSA, in its 44th year, honors the nation's top NCAA women athletes recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs at the institutions.
