Leaders of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Egypt, and the Republic of India have sent messages of congratulations to the people and Government of Eritrea in connection with the 34th Independence Day anniversary.

In their messages, sent on behalf of their respective countries and themselves, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, and President Droupadi Murmu of India conveyed their best wishes for good health to President Isaias Afwerki, as well as peace and prosperity to the Eritrean people.

The leaders also expressed their countries’ readiness to further develop and strengthen bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of their nations and Eritrea.

President Xi Jinping stated that over the past year, the Eritrean people, under the leadership of President Isaias Afwerki, have adhered to an independent path of development and continued to make notable progress in national economic and social development, as well as in improving the people’s livelihoods. He further noted that China and Eritrea have maintained close high-level exchanges, fruitful practical cooperation, and active coordination on international and regional issues.

Vibrant celebrations for Eritrea's 34th Independence Anniversary underway throughout the nation - as well as in the Diaspora - with increasing tempo. Mass Sport and Athletics Competition in Dekemhare

A mass sport and athletics competition was held in Dekemhare city on 18 May in connection with the 34th Independence Day anniversary.

The event, organized in collaboration with the Culture and Sports Department in the Southern Region and the Dekemhare sub-zone administration, featured 68 athletes, including 53 female athletes, from the sub-zones of the region, clubs from the Central Region, and the Denden club. The competitions included 3,000 and 10,000-meter races for female athletes, as well as 5,000 and 10,000-meter races for male athletes.

Athlete Hirity Habte won the 3,000-meter race, while Athlete Teklehaimanot Berhene took first place in the 5,000-meter race. In the 10,000-meter category, Olympian Athlete Rahel Daniel won the women's race, and Athlete Amanuel Berhe triumphed in the men's race.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Yemane Abera, Administrator of the Dekemhare sub-zone, noted the significance of the event, emphasizing that it was held in the same area where the final offensive for the total liberation of the country took place. He also commended those who organized the colorful event.

Mr. Abraham Yohannes, Director General of Culture and Sports in the region, stated that the program was part of the 34th Independence Day anniversary celebrations and praised the strong participation demonstrated by the athletes and the public.

Just wrapped up a whirlwind tour of Germany, a highly engaging and multifaceted visit marked by meaningful meetings, thoughtful exchanges, and strategic dialogues with senior officials from the new German government.

In Berlin, it was an honor to visit and engage with several of the country’s most prominent institutions, including the German Chancellery, the Ministry of the Interior, and the Federal Foreign Office, among others.

Our discussions with high-ranking officials were productive and far-reaching, focusing on shared priorities related to peace, security, and multilateral cooperation. These conversations reflected a mutual commitment to dialogue and understanding in an increasingly complex international environment.



Beyond political institutions, our engagements also extended to academic and multilateral spaces. In Munich, we visited the University of the Bundeswehr, where we held substantive discussions with faculty and scholars from the Department of Social Sciences and Public Affairs. The dialogue touched on evolving approaches to peacekeeping, the role of emerging powers in global governance, and the intersections of military, civil, and humanitarian efforts in today’s conflict zones. Great presentations on drone-based detection of explosive devices.

We also participated in discussions at the Munich Security Conference (MSC), one of the world’s leading forums for international security policy. These conversations were both timely and relevant, offering fresh perspectives on the shifting global landscape and the role of regional actors in sustaining peace.

Another highlight of the Munich leg was our meeting with the Founder and Head of the World Food Programme’s Innovation Accelerator, a pioneering hub launched in 2015 that harnesses technology and innovation to address some of the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. The exchange underscored the importance of agile, forward-looking solutions in responding to complex crises, from food insecurity to displacement.



This visit also provided an important platform to raise issues pertaining to the Eritrean Diaspora in Germany, one of the most long-established and dynamic migrant communities in the country. We explored both the challenges faced by members of the community, particularly younger generations navigating identity and integration, as well as the significant contributions they continue to make across sectors, from academia and business to the arts and public service. Strengthening this people-to-people connection remains a priority.

Of course, no trip to Germany would be complete without a moment to appreciate its rich cultural heritage and iconic landmarks. We visited the Allianz Arena, home to FC Bayern Munich and a symbol of the country’s deep footballing tradition. We also traveled to the enchanting Neuschwanstein Castle, perched in the Bavarian Alps, a storybook palace that captivated us all with its beauty and mystery. My colleagues and I left with more questions than answers about the life and legend of King Ludwig II (1845–1886)!



All in all, this was a memorable and impactful visit, one that should help in deepening partnerships, fostering new connections, and reaffirming the value of sustained engagement and dialogue- Multilateralism. @AmbStesfamariam

SUDAN — Commander Amin Dawoud, head of the East Orta Forces and President of the United People's Front for Liberation and Justice, arrived in Eritrea at the official invitation of President Isaias Afwerki to take part in the country’s 34th Independence Day celebrations.

His visit highlighted the deep historical and cultural bonds between Eritrea and Eastern Sudan, as well as the enduring sense of shared purpose between the people of Sudan and Eritrea.

The governor of Kassala State discusses ways to activate border crossings in Kassala.

Kassala, May 21, 2025 (SUNA) - The acting governor of Kassala, Major General Al-Sadig Mohamed Al-Azraq, discussed with a visiting delegation from the General Administration of Border Crossings to the state, headed by Lieutenant General Yasser Mohamed Osman, head of the administration, ways to resume the work of the border crossings in Kassala State with the State of Eritrea, especially commercial activity.

During the meeting, which included the State Security Committee and a number of border crossing authorities, the head of the delegation reviewed the objectives of the visit, which comes within the framework of the state's interest in finding alternatives to official ports, given the existence of known challenges and risks that require the activation of official crossings in all states.

Yasser explained that they are in the process of resuming trade with Eritrea to have a national and loyal return, in addition to social responsibility and reviving the markets near the crossings.

The head of the delegation appreciated the great efforts made in the previous period by the various agencies in Kassala, pointing out that the Dignity War led to a number of Sudanese citizens seeking refuge in Eritrea, at a time when voluntary return from and through Eritrea to the country had begun.

In the same context, the delegation made a field visit to the Laffa border crossing and examined the general conditions at the crossing, which only witnesses the movement of citizens to and from Eritrea and Sudan, in addition to the requirements required to prepare the work environment at the crossing in preparation for its full operation.

The governor and the delegation from the General Administration of Border Crossings listened to a comprehensive briefing from the crossing manager, the director of Kassala Customs, and the technical personnel working at the crossing, which was opened in September 2023 to meet the movement of citizens at a time when commercial traffic had stopped since 2018 by a decision of the state for political reasons.

Everyone agreed on the importance and necessity of resuming trade through the crossings between Sudan and Eritrea, especially the Lafa crossing, and activating the trade protocols and agreements that contribute to achieving large returns and benefiting from other preferential advantages that contribute to creating social mobilization and peaceful coexistence between citizens and border communities, in addition to the security benefits.

Eritrea: Setting the Record Straight

The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Hearing on East Africa, convened on 13 May this week, unfortunately repeats several misconceptions and unsubstantiated allegations against Eritrea. It is essential to clarify these matters based on verifiable facts.

At the Hearing, Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland) raised concerns over a “boiling situation” between Eritrea and Ethiopia, singularly referring to Eritrea’s alleged “military mobilization”. As far as Eritrea is concerned, these statements echo skewed media reports rather than established facts or nuanced analysis.

Needless to emphasize, Eritrea is not mobilizing for war and has not, certainly, been engaged in provocative military action or political brinkmanship against Ethiopia.

And for the record, the specter of tension and apprehension in the region stem from unsettling Ethiopian pronouncements and frantic domestic media campaigns to acquire a

port and coastal territory through diplomatic and legal means if possible, and by force if necessary.

This is an unacceptable proposition in international relations and fraught with unnecessary and avoidable destabilization of the region. In the event, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and other relevant policy experts must call a spade a spade.

In the same vein, the testimony of former State Department official Joshua Meservey, who alleges without ascertaining the true facts, that

Eritrean troops are still inside Ethiopian territory in Western Tigray

is deplorable provoking serious questions of underlying motive and intent.

As Eritrea has underlined on various occasions, such statements deliberately couched in ambiguous terms actually refer to and are euphemisms for the sovereign Eritrean territories – also endorsed in the EEBC Arbitral Ruling of 13 April 2002 – including Badme and other towns that remained occupied for almost two decades by previous Ethiopian regimes in flagrant violation of international law.

Eritrean troops have otherwise fully redeployed, after the end of the war in Northern Ethiopia, and remain inside our sovereign territory.
