In diplomatic terms what it means is that Kenya with a quarter of Ethiopian population is chosen over Ethiopia to be the centre of HOA politics. Despite doing all the things they asked him to do, the Americans just didnโt think Abiye is a capable and reliable ally.
They just looked at him how he handled the war and concluded the guy is full of [deleted].
Abiye made one huge mistake after another. The one that will come back to haunt him is not finishing the TPLF decisively. Not only that he gave the TPLF an excuse to fight with the help of the West by agreeing Welkayit and Raya are part of Tigrai. That is the darkest and the most dangerous corner he put himself voluntarily. Guaranteed there will another round of war and the pattern will continue until Abiye is gone. He is stupid and evil.
Chances are the AU may end up in Kenya.

You're presuming that Abyi wants that roll, to begin with. Being chosen as the US's "Anchor State" demands a lot of shedding blood, sommarsaults & yuh suh Massa's.
On the other hand & as I pointed out as a headline, this is 1 more example that the era of US's favorite Cinderella roll of the junta is definitely over.
