I think you are right. They even refused to wrire and speak their Gurage language other than Amhraic just to prove they are anything but Ethiopian. They equated Ethiopianist= Amharic.
It all started by those who were given high positions of power in the Ethiopian government from way back to Menelick era and carried forward to the present, who in turn exrted influence on Gurage Zone gov, schools, churches and mosques.
Proof a group doesn't die suddenly but slowly.
