On Somalia's Independence Day, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reignited the long-buried dream of Greater Somalia by declaring that three "missing" parts of the Somali nation are still looking toward Mogadishu with hope.
The three territories he alluded to are Ethiopia's Somali Region, Kenya's Northeastern Province, and the Republic of Djibouti, lands that generations of Somali nationalists have claimed were carved away by colonial borders.
"The hope visible in Somalia today is not confined solely to the Republic of Somalia established through union in 1960," he said. "It is also shared by the other three missing parts, which look upon it with the same hope and expectation."
The remarks are likely to be viewed by Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti as a direct revival of Somali irredentist ambitions, reviving a vision that has fueled regional tensions and conflict for decades.
