During the Zagwe dynasty, the royal family primarily spoke their native Cushitic language, Agew, in private. However, Ge'ez served as the official written and liturgical language, while Amharic naturally emerged as the spoken lingua franca of the military, courts, and nobility.
How Amharic Overtook Ge'ez and Agew
Amharic’s rise was the result of a long, centuries-long process of sociopolitical dominance, military expansion, and linguistic assimilation.
1. The Shift to the "King's Language"
By the late 12th century, the Amhara nobles became kingmakers. For instance, Amhara nobles supported Zagwe King Lalibela, which led him and succeeding monarchs to adopt Amharic as Lisane Negus (the "king's language") for verbal communication in government.
2. The Rise of the Solomonic Dynasty
In 1270, Emperor Yekuno Amlak (hailing from the Amhara region of Shewa) overthrew the Zagwe dynasty. He firmly established Amharic as the official tongue of the imperial court, using it as a deliberate tool for administration, unity, and assimilation across diverse regions.
3. The Extinction of Ge'ez as a Spoken Tongue
Ge'ez stopped being an everyday spoken language around the 10th century, morphing into a classical/liturgical language used strictly for church texts and royal chronicles. Amharic filled the everyday void left by Ge'ez, but borrowed heavily from the older language’s vocabulary and script to legitimize itself.
4. The Assimilation of the Agew (Semitization)
Rather than being completely eradicated, the Agew people were largely "Semitized". As Semitic-speaking Amhara expanded and established trade and military dominance, non-Semitic groups (including the Agew) found it advantageous to adopt Amharic as their primary language to access administrative, military, and social opportunities.
5. The Lingua Franca and the Military
Amharic is widely believed by linguists to have developed as a functional lingua franca—a practical, simplified trade language used to bridge diverse ethnic, Cushitic, and Omotic populations. As military garrisons and state administrators traveled throughout the empire, Amharic naturally spread as the language of commerce and daily life.
