Abiy holds a doctorate in «conflict resolution». On paper he is trained to solve crises, not collect them like souvenirs.
Yet in his eight years in office, internal conflicts have only exploded.
Arkebe Okbay — a prominent Tigrayan figure and former Mayor of Addis Ababa — lays out the hard truths about port ownership and exposes the very same fallacies the Prosperity Party is recycling today.
He delivers clear warnings to those he describes as “infected with port fever”:
If you claim you will take back ports by force, then explain how. Ethiopia has already sacrificed nearly a million young people, including university students, in past wars to occupy Eritrea
If you claim you will regain ports peacefully, then tell us what new method you possess that Haile Selassie and the Derg did not already attempt.
He reminds them that the EPRDF’s choice was a principled one — to avoid endless bloodshed, respect international norms, and honor the UN-supervised referendum through which the Eritrean people won their independence.
And finally, he states plainly: Eritrea is a sovereign nation. International law applies. You cannot seize ports or land that do not belong to you.
Arkebe’s message is simple: facts matter, sovereignty matters, and history cannot be rewritten to satisfy political fantasies.
