መስቀል ለጉራጌ የዘመን መለወጫ ፣ ያዲስ አመት መቀበያ የሺ ዘመናት ባህሉ ብቻ ሳይሆን የኦርቶዶክ አማኛ ሁሉ ሆኖ ያልቀየረው ባህሉ ነው ። አንድም ያለም ኦርቶዶክስ ደመራ አያቃጥልም ። ደመራ በኦሪት ዘመን ብርሃን ሲመለክ የነበረ ገናና የብርሃን ምልክት ሲሆን ኦርቶዶክስ ካባቶቻችን የኦሪት እምነት የወረሰው ነው ። የቅረው ደብታሮች እንዳሻቸው የተረቱት ተረት ነው ።

አለምን ሕይወትን የፈጠረ ብርሃን ነው! እግዚአብሄር ብርሃን ትላለህ! ምን ማለትህ ነው! ክርስቶስ ብርሃን ነው ትላለን! ብርሃነ መስቀል! ብርሃነ ልደት የማተልው ነገር የለም! ግ ን አንዴም ምን ማለትህ እንደ ሆነ አታስብም ! ወደድክ ጠላህም የብርሃን አምላኪ ነህ!

መስቀል ማለት የብርሃን መወለድ ማለት ነው! ይህን መማር የምትችለው ከጉራጌ ነው! ከተረት በላይ ማወቅ ከፈለክ ማለት ነው! ይህም ሆነ ቀይ መስመር አትለፍ! ይህን እዙሁ እናቁመው!!!!

…..ደመራ በኦሪት ዘመን ብርሃን ሲመለክ የነበረ ገናና የብርሃን ምልክት ሲሆን ኦርቶዶክስ ካባቶቻችን የኦሪት እምነት የወረሰው ነው ። የቅረው ደብታሮች እንዳሻቸው የተረቱት ተረት ነው ።

There is nothing about Meskal or lighting ceremony in ኦሪት!
or Hebrew tradition. Nothing about meskal celebration in new testament. The meskal celebration is a late addition to christianity after Roman Empress Helena, mother of Constantine, who is said to have discovered the True Cross on which Jesus was crucified. The EoC claims to have a piece. Of course both the Old testament and most assertively the new testament talk about light by saying God is light but not in connection with the light people torch at Meskal. Where southerners, specially the Gurage started the Meskal tradition, whether they have it from axumite times I am not sure. It obviously merges with Gurage new year of መስኸሮ/መስከረም and gives a feeling of combination of new year and the cross celebration. Meskal in Gurage was pretty much celebrated by everybody including muslims who preferred to stick with their Arab holidays later by stating meskal is a christian thing. In any case it appears Meskal in many ways lost its spiritual part unlike the one celebrated by EoC in addis-at least priest and church singers there! it mostly became a festive season. Even the one celebrated in meskal square is not fully spiritual; for example people want to use it for prediction of the future based on which way the ደመራ falls! But, still, I don’t really mind about the spirituality of a holiday probably initiated by an empress!
