NCAA sanctions five airlines over regulatory violations

Mr Achimugu said the action against the airlines has been escalated to the NCAA Legal Department for further action.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) announced on Tuesday that it has commenced enforcement actions against five airlines for violations of various consumer protection regulations.p

The development was disclosed by the NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, in a statement posted on his official X page on Tuesday.

“Earlier today, I notified five airlines that the NCAA has initiated enforcement actions against the operators for violation of various consumer protection regulations (Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023),” the statement said.

The official stated that the airlines were sanctioned for multiple violations, including short-landed baggage, delayed refunds, flight delays and cancellations, a lack of responsiveness to official communications from the authority, and mishandled baggage.

Meanwhile, Mr Achimugu did not disclose the names of the sanctioned airlines.

However, the Leadership newspaper reported that the affected airlines are Ethiopian Airways, Royal Maroc Airways, Arik Air, Aero Contractors, and Air Peace.

I have checked it on ground and Ethiopian Airlines is not banned. The Nigerian CAA has issued enforcement actions ( notice) related to customers complaints but none of the five Airlines are banned. The urgent subsequent action is, the affected airlines ( including Ethiopian Airlines) will sit with the NCAA and discuss and agree on action plan to address the issues, if the airline addresses those issues as per the agreed plan it means the issues are closed. If the airline fail to address the issues as per the agreed plan , the NCAA could issue punitive directive for monetary penalty or in extreme cases banning the airline.( Airlines are usually banned for safety reasons not for customer complaints).

The ban of Ethiopian Airlines from Eritrea was politically motivated and it has no relationship with the one in Nigeria. Nigeria being among the most corrupted nations on earth also complicates the matter ( such notices could be issued by officials who are after money). Ethiopian Airlines is #1 in Africa and it shall continue to be so, ignore the noise of the nomadic & jealous ascaris who have failed to build a single successful company within the last three decades except making noise 24/7 on Ethiopia's iconic developments burning with jealousy!

Nigeria bans Ethiopian Airlines over breach of passenger rights

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has banned Ethiopian Airlines alongside four other carriers for breaching passenger rights, APA can report on Friday.

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most prestigious carrier was sanctioned in violations of NCAA regulations under Part 19, which govern passenger rights.

The authority in a statement said the ban marked a significant regulatory intervention aimed at safeguarding air travelers during the peak holiday season.

The Ethiopian airlines is accused of failing to process refunds within stipulated timelines, mishandling and short-landing baggage, and not responding promptly to directives issued by the NCAA.

As a flagship airline in Africa known for its global reach and operational excellence, Ethiopian Airlines’ inclusion in the NCAA’s enforcement action has raised eyebrows.

The NCAA has made clear that even leading international carriers like Ethiopian Airlines are not exempt from regulatory compliance.

“We are committed to protecting passengers and ensuring airlines adhere to the rules,” Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection was quoted as saying during a press conference in Abuja.

With regard to customer complaints on Ethiopian Airlines go to the customer review of the best airlines in the world and you will find such complaints. Be proud of your airline, which is the best airline in Africa.
