Egypt's meltdown on international stage, it is reportedly filing a petition to the incoming US president Trump, to mediate between itself and Ethiopia with regard to GERD. GERD is now not the issue of only Ethiopia, it has a regional governing body, Nile River Basin Commission, which is part of Nile Basin Initiative. I am not so sure if President Elect Donald Trump could find any leeway to insert himself into such a regional affair as a singular player. Even the UNSC has to refer the issue to the regional body and close the case that Egypt opened there too.

Egypt prepares Renaissance Dam file to present to Trump
Through his mediation with Somalia and Ethiopia, Erdogan dealt a blow to Egyptian influence in the region and its rivalry with Ethiopia. With its leverage disappearing overnight, Egypt must recalibrate its strategy. While the warming ties between Cairo and Ankara might offer some alternatives, Turkey’s success in this instance underscores its ability to outpace Egypt on the regional stage.

At the same time Mr. Erdogan is already in love with Ethiopia, there must be something to celebrate, I guess.

Turkish President Erdogan to visit Ethiopia, Somalia in January-February 2025
Erdogan speaks to young people following landmark deal that ended longtime row between 2 Horn of Africa nations following Turkish mediation

"The fact that a place with such a large and gigantic land is landlocked seriously disturbs them. Many countries have been involved in this issue until today, but they have not been able to solve this issue," he added.

Noting his "special rapport" with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Erdogan said this had allowed them to discuss the dispute, which escalated in January, when Ethiopia signed a deal with Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland to use the Red Sea port of Berbera.
Problem identified, problem half solved!
I am hopeful that there could be a major breakthrough in this problem at the Ankara declaration and the subsequent implementation details.

Egypt became a laughing stock of the world, by its own free will.

What about Eritrea, then?

Eritrea is not even in the equation, nobody seems to notice this tiny entity on the world stage!
