A group soldiers had deserted from the Somaliland armed forces and formed the "Gaanlib Mountain Rebels" in the central part of the State on the Gaanlib mountain.
The rebels said they would fight the repressive regime of current president, who "was suppressing opposition, oppressing civilians and destroying the economy." In the first attack near the town of Go'da Yar, the rebels killed nine police officers, wounded 17 and destroyed two vehicles.
Somaliland's Interior Minister Mohamed Kahin Ahmed accused the opposition of helping the newly formed insurgent group.
