That was in 1996. But since he invalidated the ratified constitution of 1997 and drafted his own one-man constitution in 1997, no western has bothered to pay attention to him and he has since been treated as an isolated pariah and persona non grata and, due to him, Eritrea has become known as all sort of demeaning names, including, "The North Korea's Africa, "The Prison State", "The fastest emptying country in the world", "The Open Prison", "The Largest Refugee Producing Country in the World", etc.
