Why do so many people in Belgorod, Russia, want to create the Belgorod People’s Republic and become independent?

On the morning of May 22, a group of armed men in infantry fighting vehicles and tanks entered Russia through the Graivoron checkpoint on the border of the Belgorod Region.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by the Freedom of Russia Legion and the Russian Volunteer Corps, units fighting on the side of Ukraine that include citizens of Russia.


In a TV interview, a representative of the Legion said that residents of the Belgorod region appealed to the Legion "Freedom of Russia" with a request to conduct a peacekeeping operation and demilitarization in the region.

"People are tired of the war. They are tired of being bombed,” he said.

Recently, the Russian military "dropped" two aerial bombs, similar to those used by Russia to bomb Mariupol, on sleeping Belgorod, supposedly by mistake. Or maybe pilots just don’t want to get near the Ukrainian border, fearing to be shot down? “Let’s bomb Belgorod, it’s safer.”

In addition, Russian artillery operators often confuse coordinates and fire at targets that are completely different from those on the list.

Tired of the unpredictability of their army, citizens of the Russian Federation turned to the fighters of the Legion "Freedom of Russia" with a request to demilitarize the Belgorod region.

That’s what the Ukrainian side reported on TV.
In Telegram channels, a lot of videos show details of the raid. Reportedly, the operation is still ongoing.
Witnesses say, MI-8 helicopter fell in the region.

The fighters of the Legion "Freedom of Russia" (Russian propagandists call them, “Ukrainian saboteurs”) are moving towards Belgorod. Frightened locals flee the area, lining up in a big traffic jam on the highway.

Meanwhile, the Russian army, which has allegedly defeated the group several times already, began evacuating a nuclear facility located in the Belgorod region.

An explosion occurred in the center of Belgorod. After that, the road near the building of the regional department of FSB was blocked by cars of security forces and firefighters. Apparently, something explosive was dropped by a drone.

At the same time, a woman resembling the wife of Belgorod governor Gladkov was seen at the international airport in Moscow with her bags, boarding a plane to get out of Russia.

At about 16:00 on Monday, plan ‘Edelweiss’ was enacted in the region: all personnel of the police and security forces must act together to suppress enemies.

The regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that no evacuation was announced in the region, but local public posted a video with a convoy of evacuation buses moving towards Grayvoron.

At 18:00, Governor Gladkov announced the introduction of a counter-terrorism regime in Belgorod Region: this includes monitoring of telephone and other conversations, restricting access to certain territories, seizing vehicles and other restrictive measures.

Later, Gladkov said that most of the residents of villages near border left - without specifying whether they were evacuated by the state or left to their own devices.

What does it all mean?
There is the essence and the packaging of the information.
As for the informational packaging, Ukraine is giving back to Russians their own scenario of capturing Donbas in 2014.

In 2014, Russian propaganda was saying that they were Donetsk and Luhansk miners and tractor drivers, who dug out armored personnel carriers in the mines and began fighting Ukrainian troops.

Now it’s Belgorod tractor drivers who found tanks and APCs in their warehouses and intend to liberate Belgorod.

If we are talking about the essence, it’s reconnaissance in force, to get a feel what is going on the territory of Russia.

What they discovered is that Russia de facto has no borders, there are no border troops. That despite Belgorod region spending astronomical 10 billion rubles (U.S. $125 million) on enforcing borders, they are easy to penetrate.

This is why “Belgorod tractor drivers” could simply drive to the territory of Belgorod region on tanks and armored vehicles. They took over the border control point and moved further, liberating town after town.

What was the purpose of it?
Russian media called the group that entered Belgorod region, “saboteurs”. But they are obviously more than that.
There are warehouses with tactical nuclear weapons nearby, but no one attacked them. Russian government rushed to evacuate them.

Local residents rushed out of the region. Traffic jams followed. An explosion ruptured the region’s capital Belgorod, and FSB building there was surrounded by police cars. Air raid alarms were sounding in Belgorod, residents tried to open doors of bomb shelters, which were locked and totally unprepared. Panic ensued.

But it wasn’t the panic in Belgorod that was the goal of the attack. It was likely a test of an alternative route for Ukrainian forces to attack the Russian group in Donbas, by passing through the territory of Russia.

In fact, not one, but 3 regions had groups of Russian fighters entering territories: Kursk and Bryansk in addition to Belgorod.

As usual, Putin’s reaction was to freeze and do nothing. He usually disappears from the public eye when something horrible happens.

He still hasn’t said anything about the incident. His mouthpiece Peskov said that Putin is aware of events in Belgorod, but there is no evidence of that.
Obviously, for hours this wasn’t reported to Putin. No one wanted to be the bearer of the bad news. When they found someone to report it, Putin was probably enraged and couldn’t give any orders. A video of Putin talking about “humanization of Russian courts” was posted on Kremlin site, as if it happened yesterday. Today in Putin’s plans is to give awards for cultural achievements.

And what can Putin do?
Call the Security Council, where its chief Patrushev is waiting for Yellowstone volcano to wake up and destroy the whole of North America? And his deputy chief Medvedev, whose answer to anything is the proposal to nuke every European capital.

Because of what? Because 100 Russian citizens want to get rid of Putin and are taking town by town in a Russian region? While hundreds of thousands of Putin’s militants are sitting in cold trenches in Ukrainian steppes, sent there by Putin.

What did Ukraine say?
From the side of Ukraine, the incident was commented by the representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate Andrey Yusov, adviser to the presidential office Mikhail Podolyak and deputy minister of defence Hanna Maliar.

• Yusov said that in the Belgorod region, the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom of Russia legion were conducting an operation to create a "safety zone" to protect civilian Ukrainians. He stressed that only Russian citizens participated in the operation. According to him, as a result, the security of the Ukrainian civilian population suffering from "terrorist attacks and shelling by terrorist groups" should have increased.

• Podolyak also stressed that Ukraine had nothing to do with the attack. “The only driving political force in a totalitarian country of tightened screws is always inevitably the guerrilla movement with weapons in their hands. Ukraine is watching with interest the events in the Belgorod region of Russia and is studying the situation, but has no direct relation to it. As you know, tanks are sold in any Russian military store, and underground partisan detachments still consist of Russian citizens,” he wrote on Twitter, apparently referring to Putin’s speech during the annexation of Crimea, when the Russian president said that Russian military uniforms can be bought in any military store.

• Maliar: “The situation in Belgorod region is a predictable internal Russian crisis that was brewing even before the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine. These are patriots of Russia, as far as we understand. People who actually rebelled against Putin's regime. Because what Putin is doing with the Russian Federation by waging war with us causes dissatisfaction among all conscious Russians. And the fact that it is shameful for them to own a Russian passport now, that they are ashamed to show the world that they are citizens of Russia, sooner or later should have led to exactly what is happening in Belgorod Oblast. Everyone understands that this regime must be changed. This critical mass was just building up. This is not something that happened suddenly. This dissatisfaction gradually accumulated. That is, these are internal Russian trends dictated by the desire of citizens to change the country's political system and stop the bloody war unleashed by the Kremlin.“

Wagner chief criticizes Russian Ministry of Defense over alleged Moscow drone attacks

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Russian private military company Wagner, has launched an expletive-laden tirade at the Russian Ministry of Defense following an alleged drone attack on Moscow on Tuesday.

Prigozhin said in an audio recording on his Telegram channel that he was aware of and concerned about the drone attack.

“As a person who understands this somewhat, I can tell you that many years ago it was necessary to deal with these [drone] programs -- that we are now years behind our opponents, years, maybe decades," he said in response to a question from a journalist.

The mercenary boss — who has been engaged in a bitter public feud with Russia's military leadership — said the Russian Ministry of Defense is doing “absolutely nothing at all” to catch up with developments in drone technology.

“Regarding the drones that fly over Moscow and in Moscow -- you stinking animals, what are you doing? You are swine! Get up off your asses from the offices you've been put in to defend this country,” he said.

“You are the Ministry of Defense. You didn't do a damn thing to stamp this out,” he continued, claiming he had warned about the threat many times but that officials did nothing to prevent it.

"Why the f** are you allowing these drones to hit Moscow?" he said. "Let your houses burn."

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had met with officials at the Kremlin following the alleged attack.

Putin's "working day started very early" and "he received information directly from law enforcement agencies, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the mayor of Moscow and the governor of the Moscow region".

"Everyone worked properly. The air defense system also worked well. Clearly, we are talking here about the Kyiv regime's response to our very effective strikes on one of the decision-making centers. The Sunday strike," Peskov said.

Peskov said he could not comment on where the drones were launched from and who the target was.

"The only thing is that it was obviously an attack of the Kyiv regime," he added.

Ukraine has denied any direct involvement in the attack.
