Does it matter if they capture record numbers of soldiers, unless they win also a record number of areas?

Are they fighting to capture soldiers or to gain access to an area?

That is where they missed the point, I think, and the reason why gaining any access to control an area remained a pipe dream.
Which one is a more "daunting task"?
