A sensible person asked, how would Americans react if Russia installs its nuclear-armed missiles nextdoor in Mexico ? The Cuban Missile Crisis of the 60's was enough to keep the US on edge. How about NATO's nuclear missiles in the Ukraine? It seems to me that Putin didn't want to wait until Ukraine makes good on its threat to joining NATO and installs NATO's nuclear missiles on Russia's front yard. I hate to see the Ukrainians being used as pawns, but ሳይቀድሙህ ቅደሟቸው is the name of the Geo-political game and Putin is a master strategist.
Lately, I couldn't help imagining the following scenario in my head. It's like playing the events in Ukraine in reverse.
Imagine Russia invades the Ukraine and the West imposes the-mother-of-all-sanctions, not on Russia, but on the Ukraine, and supplied Russia with modern weapons to crush the Ukrainian army into oblivion. But then, against overwhelming odds, and to everyone's surprise, the smaller but fiercely independent Ukraine emerges victorious from the war, and the defeated Russia, in an attempt to save face, appeals to the West for an Algiers agreement to permanently terminate the armed hostilitiesm and calls the lull after the rather lopsided war a "No war - No Peace" gimmick.
