Priority and Quality are Critical in Today's Education: Education is a Global Currency

____1) All fields of study are not equally created. Some have less ROI (return on investment), others have ROI. In today' global economy education is commodity and is affected by supply and demand factor. High demand programs create not only higher earning potential but higher societal value in transforming the society into better economic situation. Higher education industry is producing just not for local markets but for competitive global labor markets. In this regard, high demand fields (Science Technology and Math - STEM) which are often termed as Hard Sciences in stead of Soft Sciences ( such as arts and humanities, history, etc.) are where the priority is for most countries. Soft Sciences are considered or majored as luxury fields and they are experiencing a declining in take, because 1) graduates in these streams have lower life time earning potential 2) these field, unlike hard sciences, are not job creators. That is why in Western world we are observing those majors traditionally considered to be male such as Engineering having more female student increasingly enrolled and graduating. Coming to the debate why Ethiopia has been wasting her scarce resource on producing too many history and political scientists is a question worth to ask. The ratio of college intake has to be revisited. Ethiopia has been over enrolling people in the soft science area while her major problem is in the hard science area. At times those graduated in these art programs are not very much different from their parents who are in the farm field, the innocent farmer is better than the so called political science or history or language professor. These people are miseducated people and wasted their valuable time by not doing anything. Not doing any real job in ones life time is the same not even being born alive on this earth. The only degree those people have is "Conflict Entrepreneurship". I do not where they can sell their Conflict Entrepreneurship" academic degree (Masters or PhD). My last advice in this regard to Ethiopians is encourage your sons and daughters to study science, they do not need soft sciences they can learn it from social media, google, or from you. Life it self is school of social science and social life, they do not have pay money and waste time. Derg was producing cadre from Yekatit 12, TPLF from Civil College and the same now, there is too much surplus of Conflict Entrepreneurship - the ROI already million death harvested.

____ 2) The country should not emphasize less on quality. Quality control of education is critical. A defective education system produces a defective product, hard and impossible to fix later in the society. The quality of the education is not maintained by the government alone, it is maintained by institution, by that it does not mean ministry of education. The ministry of education can finance and issue policy for public institution but it can not certify or ensure quality because it is more political than being independent agency.


*** Politics should get out of education. You can be PP member today, but your child should not a PP degree because you love PP, he/she out lives PP thus study one of the high demand fields so they can stand out in the global labor market. We should not necessarily producing the for Oromia rather for all humanity. Politics should not dictate our children's career. Let the conquer the world in their career.
