Gereds or female domestic worker refusing to sell bodies as prostitutes to make money, and thereby transmit sexual diseases, coming from poor families, and in order to support themselves and their families, they opt to serve others by buying groceries, cooking, cleaning, babysitting and taking children to schools and bringing them back home. Some live-in the employer's residence while some rent their own place of residence. Some could be young women from poor families while others are married women.

We should condemn the damnation of 'gered' in no less strong terms as we do listro.

Both listro Dama & Listro Horus tried hard to mask the Gered word in two different ways. But the reality is Gered means daughter in Gurage languages.

Why Gered becomes the job title of maids? It is because Gurage fathers and mothers used to sell their daughters as maids for a cheap birr and some commodity.

When the elites in major cities need a maid, they will just call to Gurage zone and ask the elders to send their daughter for the domestic work and the Gurage elders respond by saying "ok, I am sending daughter (Gered)" and the elites gave the title for maids who came from Gurage.
